General Introduction to the UK P&I Club
The United Kingdom Mutual Steam Ship Assurance Association (Bermuda) Limited - generally known as the UK P&I Club - is one of the oldest P&I Clubs. It is also the largest mutual marine protection and indemnity organisation in the world. The UK P&I Club insures well over 150 million tonnes of owned and chartered ships - nearly one fifth of the world total. The Club is financially very sound, the Club's current S&P rating being A with stable outlook. The ships that the UK P&I Club insures come from more than fifty countries.
As a mutual association, the UK P&I Club has no outside shareholders and no financial links with other organisations. It exists solely for the benefit of its Members. As a mutual insurance association, the UK P&I Club is able to offer superior service, attention and coverage to its assureds. It is the Club's structure as a mutual insurance association which allows it to provide superior coverage as it enables the Club to be uniquely responsive to the changing needs of the assureds.
In keeping with its organisation as a mutual association, the UK P&I Club is directed by the members themselves. Overall control of the Club lies with the Directors, who are elected by the Clubs' Members from amongst themselves. The Directors normally meet four times a year to formulate policy on calls, the scope of cover, finance and current industry issues affecting the P&I world. They resolve specific claims which may not fall clearly within the cover.
It is our Managers and their London Agents or local offices that have most frequent contact with our Club Members. They take pride in their ability to respond promptly to requests for assistance and to provide informed advice and sympathetic help with Members' claims. The level of individual support offered goes far beyond what you might normally expect from a commercial insurer.
The size of the UK Club and the corresponding scale of our Managers' operation has permitted the development of specialist skills and expertise to a level of sophistication seldom seen in the P&I field.
In 350 ports of the world, on-the-spot help and local expertise is always available to Members, and to the masters of their ships, from the Club's 400 correspondent offices. The network includes regional offices of the managers in New Jersey and Hong Kong as well as London. The office in New Jersey handles claims arising in the US east coast and Canada, while the offices in San Francisco covers part of North and Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. These offices also support the many claims handled by other US correspondents. In addition the managers have offices in Piraeus, Tokyo (a branch owned by the Club), Beijing, Shanghai (both representative offices) and Singapore. Contact details of all the managers' offices are available here.
The managers' offices in the following locations have certification to ISO 9001:2000 standard: London, Piraeus, New Jersey, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.

Daily Workings of the Club
The day-to-day business of the Club, including its finances and investments, is delegated to an independent firm of professional managers, Thomas Miller (Bermuda) Ltd., who are responsible for implementing the policies laid down by the Directors. They are paid a management fee which is agreed in advance by the Directors and reported in the accounts of the Club.
The London Agents of the Managers, Thomas Miller P&I Ltd, their overseas offices and their worldwide network of correspondents, look after the needs of the entire Membership for claims support and advice with a round-the-clock service every day of the year. Most of the executive staff graduated as lawyers. Some are master mariners. Others have experience in ship broking and ship management.
The size of the UK Club and the corresponding scale of our Managers' operation has permitted the development of specialist skills and expertise to a level of sophistication seldom seen in the P&I field.
Great emphasis is placed on maintaining a regular dialogue with Members at an individual level. To that end, the managers have devolved responsibility for member relations, claims management and advisory services to their offices closest to the Member's principal place of business. A full description of the management structure of the Club can be found in Making Contact.
Investment management services are provided by Thomas Miller (Investment) Limited.
