Analysis of Claims

Analysis of Major ClaimsThe UK Clubs Analysis of Major Claims is a detailed examination of the UK Club's claims over US$100,000. The report was first published in 1991 and the most recent in 1997, which examined some 3,700 major claims worth US$1.75bn incurred over the ten years from 1st Jan 1987 to 1st Jan 1997. The increased time span allows us for the first time to plot the trends as well as the actual frequency and value of the five principal categories of the Club's claims; Cargo, Personal Injury, Property, Pollution and Collision.

Loss Prevention Statistics?

Access Loss Prevention Statistics

Analysing information is one of the main roles of the Loss Prevention department. In its first Analysis of Major Claims in 1990, the UK Club identified that 'human error' accounted for 58% of all its claims over US$100,000. It is this sort of information that guides the Loss Prevention department in deciding the focus of new initiatives. Below is a collection of examples of the statistical information available to Members.

Pollution Statistics:
This presentation covers trends and statistics for spillages of bunkers, crude and fuel oil, including amount spilled and ship type, by year.

LNG Insurance Claims:
The UK Club insures 47% of the world fleet of LNG carriers. This presentation compares LNG carrier claims with other ship types and assesses their risk, looking into the type of claims that are most common with these ships.

Tanker Claims Statistics:
Based on UK P&I Club claims over US$100,000, the following presentation indicates what percentage of Club claims are tanker related, the causes of those claims and the affect of the human factor.

Who Makes Errors Statistics:
Based on UK P&I Club claims over US$100,000, the following presentation indicates who is responsible for major claims, the most common types of claims and their values. The charts indicate what type of claims people onboard are likely to be involved with.

Total Liability Claims:
Based on UK P&I Club claims over US$100,000, This chart shows the total liability claims by risk between 1987 - 2001. From the chart you can see that the largest section, cargo claims, account for 27% of the total claims.

Cargoes Damaged:
In relation the chart above, i.e. based on UK P&I Club claims over US$100,000, this chart shows the main cargoes damaged in the same period (1987 - 2001).

Structural Failure Claims:
Based over a period from 1987 to 1999, this graph shows how large structural failure claims have fallen dramatically. Ship Inspection failures are down from 15% to less than 4%.

Crew Injury Claims:
One third of the Club 's major claims occur in USA and approximately 35% of those claims are bodily injury related. The following graphs show some statistical information specific to crew injury claims.

Manning

The Club has recently conducted an exercise to produce some benchmarking statistics on current manning levels (2002-2004) on UK Club ships. Some 1229 ships including 823 tankers, bulk carriers and containerships were inspected by the Club's ship inspection department during this period and the following manning levels observed.

Caution must be used when interpreting the graphs as no account has been taken of trade requirements and or ship age.
