What is Benchmarking?

Since the beginning of 2000, the Club's five ship inspectors have been reporting on six main areas of the ships operation as Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Below Standard or Very Poor attaching a performance indicator of 1 to 5 in each category with 1 equal to excellent. These are:

Crane Cargo Worthiness - Hatch watertight integrity, holds, cranes, derricks, vent pipes etc.

Manning - communications, knowledge, certification, working practices etc.

Service and Maintenance - Bridge procedures, management controls, maintenance, stores, admin etc.

Safety Standards - FFE, LSA, SOLAS, safety awareness etc.

Operational Performance - Anything that affects ships performance e.g. PSC and cargo work.

Pollution Control - Pollution avoidance, oily water separators.

An average performance for each ship has then been derived by averaging the six findings for each of the categories. Ship performance indications are then combined and averaged to give a fleet rating and compared to the performance indication for that type of fleet in the Club.

This can be shown as a graph e.g.:

UK Club average tanker area of operation rating compared with Quality Shipping Co Ltd individual ship ratings.

This benchmarking service is now available on epandi.com so that each Member can look at the performance of his own fleet at any time. The accuracy of this assessment will vary depending on the sample size of the number of ships assessed both in the Club as a whole and in the Member's own fleet. At the present time over 1800 ships have been rated in this manner. As the inspectors are employed by the Club itself, an independent and unbiased view is assured. An example of benchmarking is attached in the following Benchmarking Report (159 Kb pdf).
