Loss Prevention FAQ

What is the FAQ?

Use the button above to access the Loss Prevention FAQ. The FAQ Database is a collection of questions put to the department by Members and claims executives. Storing them in an easy to access database enables the department to answer queries immediately and efficiently. Please find below a sample question from the database:-
Bulldog Grip

What is the correct way to utilise bull dog grips?Bulldog grips

Experience continues to show that the most common cause of lashing failure is the incorrect application of bulldog grips. Tests indicate that where an eye is formed around a thimble in the correct manner, the lashing arrangement will hold secure with loads up to or even in excess of 90 percent of the nominal break-load (NBL) of the wire before slipping or fracturing. Without a thimble, the eye can be expected to slip at loads of about 70 percent NBL. Where the correct procedures are not followed slippage is likely to occur at much reduced loads. Tests were recently carried out on a licensed test bed on 16mm and 18mm wire rope lashing configurations. More than 100 tests were applied under strictly controlled conditions......

The answer then goes into further detail, recommending the minimum number of wire rope grips for each eye.

The information for the above FAQ was gathered from the Carefully to Carry Committee and has also been the subject of a UK Club Good practice poster.
