Ballast Water Management in the United States

  • Date: 11/04/2013

The United States Coast Guard has recently posted two useful updates to its resource page on ballast water management.  Its extensive list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) on the subject clarifies topics ranging from the definition and applicability of ballast water standards through to type approval of ballast water management systems.  These FAQs were augmented and updated on the 5th April.

But Members seeking an overview of US regulation of ballast water management can download a Powerpoint presentation which carries an accompanying audio commentary on regulation and compliance.

A copy of the latest FAQs are published on our website courtesy of the US Coast Guard together with links to their latest Powerpoint presentation and other resources provided on the USCG website.  Click here to view.

The Club has previously published a Legal Briefing for Members seeking an overview of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments.  This title “New regulations for the control of ships’ ballast” can be downloaded from the Club website as a pdf.

The IMO also maintains a useful web resource on ballast water management covering the convention, ballast water management technology, a review of the commonest invasive aquatic species as well as their own FAQ list.
