UK Club hosts 30th annual Mountain Climb in Korea

  • Date: 28/04/2016

The 30th UK Club Korean Mountain Climb took place on Saturday 16th April, 2016 on the Yumyeong Mountain which is situated about an hour and a half outside of Seoul. The mountain was originally known as Mayusan Mountain until 1973, when the Empor Alpine reached the mountain during a hike across the nation. It has since been renamed Jin Yu-myeong, after a member of the expedition. The Yumyeong Mountain was chosen for the 30th Anniversary as it was also the site of the first UK Club Mountain Climb in 1986.

We had an excellent turn out of over 40 people from the our Members and Brokers in the area and the Thomas Miller team was supported by Hyopsung, the Club's representatives in Korea.

The Thomas Miller team consisted of Andrew Jones, the Regional Director for Asia Pacific, DY Kim and Sylvia Shi from the Hong Kong office, and one of the  Underwriters for the Region, James Pietri. Two special guests took part in the climb - Richard Carpenter who has continued to travel to Korea to support the Mountain Climb every year despite his retirement in 2002, and K H Kim who retired from Hyopsung in February 2016. Richard and K H were both instrumental in setting up the tradition of the annual mountain climb back in 1986. Over the years, both have completed 29 of the 30 climbs.

During the well-deserved Korean barbeque lunch, Andrew Jones presented gifts to each of the two Special Guests and everyone who attended received a “30th Anniversary” commemorative gift.
