702 - 06/10 - Iron Ore Imports - China

The Association would like to advise Members about the current situation regarding the import of iron ore into China.

It has become apparent that that import of iron ore with a Fe content of less than 60% in China requires a suitable import permit. Permits have become increasingly difficult to obtain and problems have been noticed with low grade iron ore shipments arriving in China from India, in particular.

Bearing the above information in mind, the Association would recommend that, before transporting iron ore with an Fe content of less than 60%, it should be confirmed that the Chinese buyers have obtained am import permit. If no permit has been issued, then disputes may arise and the vessel could be detained.
