The UK Club is providing a package of the International Shipping Federation’s (ISF) guide publication “Guidelines on the Application of the ILO Maritime Labour Conventions (2nd edition)” and the Lloyds Register/UK Club “ILO MLC pocket checklist” free to all its members Both publications focus on helping employers ensure compliance with the ILO Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), which enters into force in six months time on the 13th August.

The ILO MLC Smartphone App, developed by The Club and Lloyd's Register is aimed at assisting Members and Ships Crews' to ensure they are in compliance with the Maritime Labour Convention 2006, which will enter into force in August 2013. The app is free, and available for iPhone, iPad and Android smartphones.

The ILO MLC pocket checklist aims to help owners, operators and crew comply with the Marine Labour Convention which comes into force in August 2013. Non compliance with the requirements of the convention will result in port state control (PSC) detentions, so to help reduce the risk of your ship being detained, as a minimum, we strongly recommend that you include the items in this checklist as part of your final checks before the voyage and port entry.

Increasing numbers of main engine failure related incidents and accidents following blackouts have led to a data collection exercise by the UK Club’s risk assessors and a detailed analysis of more than 700 claims which has given cause for concern.  A significant number of these claims for third party property damage, many of which were enormously expensive and in some cases amounted to millions of dollars could be attributed, directly or indirectly, to main engine failures or electrical blackouts.

This early summer edition of the Bodily Injury Newsletter places particular emphasis on ‘maintenance and cure’.   The breadth of exposure through this avenue of claim is not widely understood. The seemingly limitless potential for punitive damages where owners fail to pay maintenance and cure, is explored as is the trend towards palliative treatment which raises the prospect of a continued cost for owners. Recent issues and developments arising from crew injury through falling overboard and parting mooring lines are also reviewed.

The purpose of the Industry Best Management Practices (BMP) contained in this booklet is to assist ships to avoid, deter or delay piracy attacks off the coast of Somalia, including the Gulf of Aden (GoA) and the Arabian Sea area. Experience, supported by data collected by Naval forces, shows that the application of the recommendations contained within this booklet can and will make a significant difference in preventing a ship becoming a victim of piracy.
