Risk Management Advice
Risk Focus
With its team of risk assessors, the UK Club is in a unique position to gather data and target areas of risk onboard ship. The Club regularly carries out extensive vessel surveys on over 400 ships gathering valuable information on risk ‘hotspots’. The Club uses the detailed analysis of these results to draw sound conclusions and publishes these in the risk focus reports shown below. The Club's next Focus is on engine failures and blackouts.
Human Element
The UK Club identified in its first Analysis of Major Claims in 1990 that ‘Human Error’ accounted for 58% of all its claims over US$100,000. In the years since, human error has remained stubbornly high as the prime cause of accidents and claims. As a consequence, the Club has studied the causes of and has analysed human error in the maritime context with the view of raising awareness of this are of concern.
Handling 7000 claims a year the Club has a huge amount of data with which to help assess risk. Working with this data and the experience of its claims handlers and underwriters, it is possible for the Club to provide detailed risk profiling for its Members. This can enable Members to pin point those areas where claims might be reduced through focused loss prevention initiatives.
Calendar
The 2012 Loss Prevention Calendar continues to focus on the Pro Active Risk Management system carried out by the Club's own Risk Assessors inspectors. Based on a proven simple methodology the department has worked with the Club's claims executives, underwriters and Members crews to focus on those things that frequently cause claims and to assess the likelihood of those claims occuring.
