EU low-sulphur fuel update part 4 - Europe

Following the introduction of the European Directive concerning “Sulphur Content of Liquid Fuels”, the European Commission issued a recommendation (2009/1020/EU) regarding the safe implementation of regulations requiring the use of low suphur fuels by ships at berth in community ports.

Following the issue of the European recommendation, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has published Marine Guidance Note (MGN) 400 which provides additional guidance on the implementation of the regulations. MGN 400 offers definitions and information regarding fuel changeovers, record keeping and exemptions. The full MGN can be accessed from the MCA website using the link below.
