Dangerous Goods Guides

The frequency and severity of incidents involving dangerous goods across the transport chain prompted the UK P&I Club to launch the advisory guidebooks and supporting training material.

Who is involved?

Richard Masters, who compiled the guidebooks, has a deep understanding of transport operations, and has been in involved in the shipping industry since the 1970s. Richard, a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor, was responsible for the setting up of the dangerous goods safety management centre at the Port of Felixstowe (the largest UK container port).

Ken Burgess is Director of Exis Technologies who produced Hazcheck Systems, including the electronic copy of the IMDG Code. Hazcheck Online is a subscription-based Internet facility that validates container loads of dangerous goods, and produces the necessary documents, for shippers of dangerous goods. A trial period of Hazcheck Online is included in the Book it Right and Pack it Tight package.

The Carefully to Carry Committee are grateful to the following companies for their support, especially in determining so quickly those areas considered so important for the clarification of the regulations: China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO), Evergreen Marine Corp, Maersk Group, Malaysia International Shipping Company (MISC), Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), and P&O Nedlloyd.

22 February 2006
UK Club Service Director, Herry Lawford, visited the Maritime Safety Authority (MSA) of Shanghai to discuss the Club's dangerous goods project. The Club and the Shanghai MSA are discussing the possibility of the MSA arranging the translation and reprinting of the guides in Chinese, as well as supporting future seminars in the region.
