The Donald O'May Lecture in London
On 16th November 2005 some 200 people attended the Southampton Institute of Maritime Law's Donald O'May Lecture at the Merchant Taylors' Hall in London. The lecture, Mainstreams in American Maritime Law, was given by John Kimball, chairman of Healy & Baillie, the first American to give the O'May lecture. He gave an outline of the origins of American maritime law, illustrating its coherence and the consistency of the US courts with decisions such as 'Kirby', the 'Kariba', and the limitation applied to punitive damages awards in 'State Farm'.
The lecture was chaired by Andrew Taylor of Richards Butler and introduced by Yvonne Baatz, Director of the Institute of Maritime Law, Southampton. Elizabeth Blackburn QC gave the vote of thanks. This was the 23rd lecture given annually in memory of Donald O'May, a former senior partner of Ince & Co. John Kimball's lecture will be published in Lloyd's Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly.
