Member seminar in New Jersey
UK Club Members gathered last week at the Thomas Miller Americas (TMA) office in New Jersey to participate in the annual bodily injury claims seminar. Personal injuries and illness now cost the Club more than cargo - for many years the largest source of liability claims.
TM(A) President Mike Jarrett set the scene for the day long event with a presentation on the key trends in costs arising from these claims.
The location of claims and the physical causes as well as the types of illness and injury were identified. Mike explained the key drivers of crew wage inflation, world fleet growth and contingency fee funded legal actions.
Perhaps most importantly he explained how the Club can assist Members to reduce or mitigate these claims through intervention in the US and abroad, as well as the provision of information and loss prevention guidance.
The day's presentations were made by Thomas Miller bodily injury specialists and a US based Member as well as medical and legal experts.
Finally, a bodily injury claim case study engaged everyone in the technicalities of coping with the various medical, legal and operational responses required to estimate the claim's financial exposure and bring it to a successful conclusion.
The list of Members attending encompassed a wide range of type of operators from both sides of the continent including American Steamship, Delaware Bay, Disney Cruises, Horizon Lines, Maersk USA, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Seaspan, Vane Brothers and TBS.
The rewarding presentations and discussions encouraged TM(A) to begin planning a repeat event for the end of 2008. Members interested in finding out more should contact either Louise Livingston in San Francisco or Mike Jarrett in New Jersey.
TMA's Bodily Injury team of Karen Hildebrandt, Jana Byron and Dee O'Leary is led by Louise Livingston in San Fancisco. This website also carries further information in the TMA Bodily Injury newsletter and the People Claims section of the Loss Prevention area.
