Working together to save lives
The UK Club and Lloyd's Register have launched an initiative to highlight the vital importance of life saving appliances working properly and lifeboat drills being conducted safely.
On March 11th it published a Life-Saving Appliances Pocket Checklist, which lists and explains critical areas to be checked, monitored and maintained. This should reduce the risk of Port State Control detentions.
The UK P&I Club's loss prevention team has long been concerned about lifeboat incidents and has issued a steady flow of advice over the years to help seafarers avoid and prevent them.
Karl Lumbers, Loss Prevention Director, explained: "We should be unremitting in doing what we can to reduce loss of life at sea. In particular, the deaths and injuries resulting from lifeboat incidents have become a major problem for all parties involved in shipping. If people follow the advice in the checklist meticulously, they should avoid the wrath of Port State Control and, far more important, help to prevent tragedies."
The publication identifies which records need to be kept up to date and readily available on board merchant vessels. It also explains how to notify port authorities of any permanent or temporary remedies and other measures to maintain compliance.
Printed on polypropylene, the checklist is for practical use and re-use on board. The booklet will be available to our Members very shortly through their usual Club contacts and via the Loss Prevention section of this website.
This booklet is the third in a series aimed at helping owners, operators and crew comply with international convention requirements, thereby reducing the risk of Port State Control detention. The previous booklet Marine Pollution Prevention Pocket Checklist produced in co-operation with the Club is also published on this website.
