Staying safe as gas transportation increases
One sector of our industry consistently has fewer cargo claims - liquefied gas carriers.
Over a thousand ships carry more than 200 million tonnes of liquefied gas every year, but in the course of 50,000 voyages in the last four decades a major incident has yet to occur.
The need to keep up with buoyant demand for liquefied gases requires more ships and more crews. How will gas shipping meet the challenges of these changes while maintaining claims at a very low level?
Part of the answer can be found in Gas Matters™, a 40-minute DVD published this week by the Club for use by crew and onshore staff. It provides advice on legal, technical and managerial aspects of preparation for loading, loading operations, the voyage, discharging and changing cargo.
Like previous videos in the Cargo Matters series, this video aims to increase awareness of the causes of P&I claims for cargo damage and loss in a rapidly changing technical and commercial environment.
An excerpt of the Gas Matters™ video can be found in the Videos section of the Loss Prevention section of this website. A press release also gives background on the technical and commercial changes the gas industry is facing and how loss prevention practice can address them.
The world's first LNG ship - Methane Pioneer - was entered in the UK Club in 1959. Today our Club insures 9.7 million gt of LNG shipping, equivalent to more than 40 per cent of the world LNG fleet. Other loss prevention and advisory materials draw on that considerable experience including Carefully to Carry articles on the carriage of liquefied gases.
These materials are available to Members who have registered to use the Club's online services. If you have not yet registered, click here to establish your unique user ID and password.
