Encouraging Good Practice
The latest in the UK Club's continuing series of Good Practice posters were published this week. This latest edition provides safety and practical loss prevention advice specifically for passenger ships.
They contrast good and poor practices around the ship using photographs, cartoons and simple English bullet points to communicate to all crew nationalities.
The A4 posters concentrate particularly on safety subjects such as side shell openings, lifting risks, engine room fittings and practices, safety rails and passenger leisure facilities.
This latest set of posters is the sixth batch produced by the Club since 2002, with the total number published reaching 135. Members can access the posters in the Loss Prevention area of this website by clicking on the Posters link on that page.
UK Club Loss Prevention Director Karl Lumbers explains: "Human error as a principal or contributory factor in claims is a recurring theme. Like their predecessors, these latest posters tackle areas where previous bad practices have contributed to death, injury and highly expensive claims."
As the posters say "It's your ship and equipment - look after them and they will look after you."
The topics chosen and advice offered reflect the observations and opinions of the UK Club's ship inspection team. Since they were founded in 1990 they have carried out thousands of visits to UK Club-entered vessels of all types.
Their visits offer a co-operative approach to improving ship quality and avoiding losses. As ex-seafarers themselves, the inspectors are well aware of the many demands upon a master during a port visit and do their utmost to make their visit supportive.
A comprehensive range of material on ship inspection can be found in the Loss Prevention section of the Club website. Lloyds List columnist Michael Grey produced a lengthy and informative article in that paper reporting a typical visit.
