Explosion onboard - a case study

A unique new way of understanding and preparing for serious claims incidents will be taking place in Hamburg next month.

On 4th September our Club will join together with the UK Defence Club and a selection of industry experts to present a case study with a difference. A dynamic role-play will use a cast of realistic characters to explore the legal and practical issues that arise when things go wrong.

In addition to the Club executives participating in the cast, the industry experts taking the roles of key figures in an incident are
  • Julian Clarke, (Holman Fenwick Willan solicitors)
  • Andrew Wright (MMFB solicitors)
  • Michael Baker-Harber (LMAA arbitrator)
  • John Third (Brookes Bell, technical consultants).
The chosen scenario is a container ship, the MV Atlantic, which loads a container of cigarette lighters in Asia for discharge in Europe. Unfortunately the cargo catches fire en route. As the story unfolds the cast will develop the answers to such questions as:
  • What steps should be taken to minimise the risk?
  • Is it a dangerous cargo?
  • Who is responsible for the consequences?
  • What are the legal issues ?
The event is being held at the end of the business day at the Hotel Kempinksi Atlantic, starting at 1700. The session, which lasts approximately one and a half hours, promises to be an engaging and highly informative event. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and follow-up discussion as the play concludes with a cocktail reception for the attending guests.

If you wish to attend this event please contact Linda Lewis (linda.lewis@thomasmiller.com) or your regular contact at the UK Club. We anticipate this being a popular and well supported event.
