Hamburg 27 April 2006

The UK Club jointly hosted a seminar on the safe stowage, carriage and packing of dangerous goods in containers, with the Chemical Distribution Institute (CDI).
The one day seminar was held at the Hotel Atlantic Kempinski, Hamburg and was attended by representatives of ship operators, container freight stations, freight forwarders, and others including lawyers and official authorities.
Over the last few years the marine industry has seen a marked increase in hazardous cargo related container incidents, causing direct and indirect financial losses to both shippers and carriers. In almost all these cases it would seem there has been either a lack of understanding, deliberate avoidance or at least insufficient compliance with the requirements of the IMDG Code.
What can be done to reduce these incidents? The UK Club in co-operation with CDI is hosting a series of one day seminars for their clients, the shipowners and major shippers, to highlight the areas which they feel are the weak parts of the chain and to discuss three new initiatives recently developed independently by the UK Club, the Chemical Distribution Institute and Exis Technologies.
