Hong Kong 18 October 2006

On the 18th October the UK Club in conjunction with the TT Club hosted a seminar on "The carriage of dangerous goods" for 90 of their Members in Hong Kong. Talks focused on the differing views of different parts of the industry on the subject. New initiatives on internet training recently launched by Exis Technologies in conjunction with the IMO were also discussed.

Local views were put forward by Patrick Wong of the TT Club who concentrated heavily on the local legal requirements and gave frightening true stories of non declaration of DG cargoes in the area.

Over the last few years the marine industry has seen a marked increase in hazardous cargo related container incidents, causing direct and indirect financial losses to both shippers and carriers. In almost all these cases it would seem there has been either a lack of understanding, deliberate avoidance or at least insufficient compliance with the requirements of the IMDG Code.
