Singapore 20 October 2006

On the 30th October the UK Club in partnership with the TT Club and the Chemical Distribution Institute held a seminar in the Shangri La hotel Singapore on the carriage of dangerous goods. The audience of over 100 people, consisted of shippers, freight forwarders, ship owners, ship managers, port and terminal operators and chemical producers. Virtually all areas of the DG transport chain were represented.

Presentations by insurers, owners, freight forwarders, auditors, and DG experts raised many questions several of which remain unanswered. The Club believes that the DG issue will not be resolved by any one part of the chain alone, only by discussing the issues in open forum will all parties fully understand the problems which many parts of the chain face.

Over the last few years the marine industry has seen a marked increase in hazardous cargo related container incidents, causing direct and indirect financial losses to both shippers and carriers. In almost all these cases it would seem there has been either a lack of understanding, deliberate avoidance or at least insufficient compliance with the requirements of the IMDG Code.
