Taipei 26 October 2006

On the 26th of October Taiwanese TT and UK Club Members attended the Agora Garden Hotel for a private conference on the carriage of dangerous goods. The seminar was oversubscribed with some 90 people attending. Local speakers Mr Raymond Tu, former Chairman of the Taiwan Freight Forwarders association and Mr Sting Chen of Wan Hai Lines Ltd gave strong lectures on the Freight Fowarders/Owners view of the problems faced by their particular sides of the industry. With an air of humour both presentations were well received.

The problems of poor quality packing, stowage, DG seperation, fraudulent paperwork were discussed in depth and the Club's video "Any Fool Can Stuff a Container (now subtitled in Chinese) was shown to emphasise these issues.

Over the last few years the marine industry has seen a marked increase in hazardous cargo related container incidents, causing direct and indirect financial losses to both shippers and carriers. In almost all these cases it would seem there has been either a lack of understanding, deliberate avoidance or at least insufficient compliance with the requirements of the IMDG Code.
