Gas Matters™

The latest video in the Cargo Matters series

Misinformed opponents of gas ships have portrayed them as bombs waiting to go off but they are in fact among the safest ships afloat.

Over 900 ships lift 50 million tonnes of LPG each year, as well as 20 million tonnes of ammonia and petrochemical gases. More than 200 ships carry 150 million tonnes of LNG a year. Over 50,000 LNG cargoes have been delivered without major incident or cargo escaping.

But ahead of gas shipping lies turbulent change!

Global economic growth is increasingly dependent on gas, and to meet the rapidly rising demand requires new suppliers; new ships, and shipowners new to the trade; new oceans to navigate; new technology – including new means of propulsion; and new ways of doing business – with pressure on freight rates, and disputes over quantity and quality, gassing-up and cooling-down time, and loss of hire.

Perhaps the biggest concern of all is - will there be enough skilled and experienced manpower to do all the new jobs properly? The UK Club knows that, in terms of cargo claims, gas ships have a record second to none. The challenge is to maintain today’s high standards through a period of rapid expansion and change. By focusing on current best practice, this video aims to help achieve that goal.

Filming Gas Matters™

Left: Karl Lumbers and Colin Legget with Jonathan Harris, the filmmaker, at the editing studio to approve the final edit of Gas Matters™.

Filming was conducted over a period of two weeks at various ports in the Netherlands and Portugal. The film was put together in the editing suite over a period of two months.

In the final phase the narration was added - the voice of Jack Fortune, who narrates numerous documentaries including the Emmy award-winning Fall of the World Trade Centre, and many other main stream productions.
