Obituary: Captain Daniel Lee (1951-2008)

We regret to announce the death last weekend of our colleague Captain Daniel Lee aged 56.

Daniel joined Thomas Miller in 1985 and commenced a career of more than twenty years serving the P&I claims needs of our Members in both Eastern Europe and Asia-Pacific, particularly China.

Daniel originally went to sea in 1970 with Ben Line and rose to the rank of master mariner after serving with a variety of shipping companies such as MISC and Seaspan. He came ashore in 1982 and worked in port management before embarking on his P&I career.

His broad maritime experience was a valuable asset to the London based claims syndicates he worked with such as C3 and J1.

People claims quickly became his speciality working with the personal injury syndicate under Phil Nichols and Steve Harvey.

Daniel was the first Project Director of the PEME scheme and he devoted considerable energy and enthusiasm to this role driving the programme’s growth and development in its early years.

He returned to cargo claims management and had served his most recent team – Area Group L2/L6 – for nearly nine years until his recent illness.

A fluent speaker of Mandarin, Cantonese and Malay, Daniel was a key London liaison for the Club's Chinese Members. He will be remembered for his welcome and support to visiting Chinese Members and other partners as well as to those based in London.
