People Claims
What is the People Claims Area?
The People Claims team look after all of the UK P&I Club's claims in relation to crewmembers, passengers, supernumeraries, stevedores, stowaways and refugees. The team also provides general advice on associated matters to the Club Membership and on crew contracts in particular.
People Claims now account for approximately 34% of all UK Club claims with a value in excess of US$100,000. This secure area provides Members with information on people claims and a source of general advice, local knowledge from correspondents and lawyers, and industry news.

Ship's Captains Medical Guide
Also provided in the secure area is a link to an electronic version of the Ship Captain’s Medical Guide, which is primarily intended for use on ships not carrying a doctor. The recommended measures of prevention and treatment are therefore confined to those which can reasonably be expected of the ship’s officers.

An overview on people claims
In 1999, personal injury and illness overtook cargo as the largest single group of liability claims by value. From 1998 to 2002 inclusive, they averaged 31 per cent of the total claims paid out by the Club. The average cost of personal injury claims increased by roughly one-quarter in just five years.
