Bulletin 284 - 1/03
Major berthing delays - Skikda new port - Algeria

We have been advised of major berthing delays in Algeria's new port of Skikda caused by extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain and snow. The port, which mainly operates facilities for shipments of liquefied gas, aromatics, crude and oil products, has been shut intermittently since 17th January 2003 and there seems little chance of it opening again in the next few days as the port is unsheltered and therefore susceptible to extreme weather conditions.

Skikda's old port, which is more sheltered, is less affected by delays.

We advise Members to make their operations departments aware of these delays.
