Strike Action Update - South Africa

Following on from Bulletin 693, the Association would like to update Members of the current situation in South Africa. Transnet, the para-statal company, recently issued a statement confirming that an agreement with UTATU, one of the two major unions involved, has been agreed.

Despite the agreement with UTATU negotiations are still ongoing with SATAWU, the other trade union. Transnet estimate that around 67% of workers have returned to work including significant numbers of those represented by SATAWU.

The recent strike action has lead to backlogs in both onshore and offshore operations, with a large number of vessels now anchored off key ports in the country. Despite the backlogs, Transnet has stated that critical cargo is moving and that no fuel shortages have been noted.

The Association would advise that Members contact their local agents before arriving in South Africa to obtain the latest information. In addition, Transnet are posting regular updates on their website which can be accessed by the link below:
