Local Travel

The new airport for Athens (Eleftherios Venizelos) which opened in 2001 operates very efficiently and is certainly a vast improvement on the old airport. Taxis from the airport to the centre of town are charged on a tariff rate and should cost no more than €20 at most times of the day. Several new roads have opened recently and Piraeus can now be reached from the airport within an hour. There is also a very efficient bus service from the airport into the centre of Athens which should cost no more than €2.50. The choice of hotels in Athens and its suburbs is enormous and many of the international chains are currently upgrading their facilities as part of Greece's preparation for the Olympics in August 2004.

Getting Around Athens

The public transport system in Athens is actually quite effective but can be daunting for the visitor. Many journeys require changes between buses, trains and the metro. Taxis provide a comparatively cheap alternative but care needs to be taken, as drivers are prone to pick up additional passengers and take lengthy detours on the way! Generally, transport links are improving as various road-building projects are completed before the Olympics. There is also a new tram being constructed which will run from the centre of Athens to the southern Coastal suburbs and a new train which will operate from the airport into the city. Both are expected to open shortly before August 2004. Like any bustling city certain times of the day are very busy. Although the core of shipping activity remains in Piraeus many offices are tending to move to either the northern or southern suburbs and a considerable amount of time can be wasted moving between the three focal points.
