Matthew Bayman, Trainee Underwriter, UK P&I Club

I am currently studying for the ACII which is a professional Insurance qualification.  The qualification is split into three sections namely the certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma.  I have been studying for the last four years and thankfully am now in the final stages.  The exams are made up of 8 course work assignments and a three hour written examination based on essay style questions.  The work is predominately self study, although there is distant learning element where we are assigned a tutor to who we submit practice questions in order to gain some guidance and feedback prior to the exam.

The course covers the entire insurance spectrum, from the basic principles to much more specific and detailed areas of the industry. I have concentrated my studies around marine principles and underwriting management which already is proving to be very beneficial the more involved I become in the underwriting process.

The qualification is fairly time intensive and I have now taken 9 exams over a four year period. However, Thomas Miller have fully encouraged my studies and provided support by allowing study days when leading up to a examination.  Despite it being hard work I can already see the benefits and look forward to being able to use the designatory letters "ACII" (fingers crossed!).
