Hugo Wynn-Williams – Chairman of Thomas Miller Holdings Ltd., Chairman of Thomas Miller P&I (Europe) Ltd (the Managers of the UK P&I Club).
Hugo joined Thomas Miller in 1978. A member of the Thomas Miller Holdings Board since incorporation in 1999, Hugo was elected Chairman of Thomas Miller Holdings in June 2009 in which capacity he also has oversight of a number of Thomas Miller’s international businesses. He is also Chairman of the Thomas Miller Agency and Insurance Services division; Thomas Miller Claims Management and a number of other subsidiaries of Thomas Miller. As Chairman of Thomas Miller Holdings, Hugo leads the TMH Board in the formulation, setting and achievement of the strategic goals and objectives of the TMH Group. As Chairman of Thomas Miller P&I he provides leadership to, and management of, the Board of the Club liaising between the Board and the Managers alongside the CEO, ensuring it operates effectively achieving its strategic objectives.
Nigel joined Thomas Miller in 1981, working in a claims syndicate for members from Japan, Greece, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. He became a Director of Thomas Miller P&I in 1986, a Syndicate Manager in 1990, and was elected to the Thomas Miller partnership in 1994. Other areas of responsibility over the years have included UK Club's Rules and Bye-Laws, Environmental Liability, Claims Policy, recommendations on Club Policy in relation to numerous industry issues, Loss Prevention, Captive Reinsurance, and more recently the 2012/13 re-structuring of the UK Club.
He has been Deputy Chairman of the UK Club’s P&I management operation since September 2004.
Nigel represents the UK Club at IG Managers’ meetings, has served on many International Group (IG) sub-committees, and has represented the IG at many international meetings. He currently chairs the IG’s Ships' Standards subcommittee, Maritime Security sub-committee, and LNG working group. He is a former director of ITOPF and a current trustee of its pension scheme.
Andrew joined Thomas Miller as Financial Controller of UK P&I Club from Big 4 accounting firm KPMG, where he had specialised in the insurance sector. He was Chief Financial Officer for the Club from 2014 to 2018. In June 2018, Andrew was appointed Chief Executive Officer for the UK P&I Club.
Nigel joined Thomas Miller in 2003 as an actuary from PwC, a big 4 professional services firm where he specialised in analytics and M&A. He became Chief Actuary in 2008, providing actuarial services to all insurance entities managed by Thomas Miller.
With effect from 1 June 2018, Nigel was appointed Chief Financial Officer for the UK P&I Club. He was also appointed as a Director of the Club’s parent company, UK Europe, with effect from the same date.
Philip has a degree in nautical studies and an MBA. He joined Thomas Miller in 1986 and was an Area Director before moving to Greece in October 2002. He returned to the London office in November 2008 where he became the Syndicate Manager for LS2, with responsibility for overseeing the service provision to the European Membership. Philip was the Club's Deputy Claims Director, before becoming the Joint Chief Operating Officer in December 2016.
With effect from 2 March 2018, Phil was appointed Chief Operating Officer for the UK P&I Club.
Christopher oversees the Club’s underwriting policies and operations. He joined Thomas Miller in 2001, and has worked with P&I since 1989. From 2002-2007 he was based in Hong Kong to head the Managers’ operations in Asia-Pacific, working closely with Members in the region. Christopher previously held a senior claims role.
Alan is currently the Chief Claims Officer for the UK Club. He joined Thomas Miller in 2005 from a leading firm of maritime lawyers in London. Between 2007 and 2010 he held overall responsibility for management of UK Defence Club claims before moving to the P&I Club claims management function in 2010. Alan sits on the Bimco Documentary Committee, and chairs the International Group Bills of Lading and Occupational Diseases subcommittees.
Mike joined Thomas Miller in March 1980 with an Honours degree in Law. Prior to joining Thomas Miller Mike had worked in Hambros Bank and on the staff of the Law Courts in South London.
Mike worked in the London office claims syndicate dealing with the P&I and Defence members in Scandinavia,Switzerland, North and South America and managed that syndicate from 1986-1992. In February 1993 Mike moved to the Thomas Miller office in New York City at an early phase of the Thomas Miller policy of regionalisation of the Clubs claims service. Mike was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Thomas Miller (Americas ) Inc in August 2001.
Andrew brings more than twenty years experience of P&I management and claims experience to the Hong Kong team. A law graduate, he joined Thomas Miller’s London office in 1991 specialising in handling personal injury and other people claims, taking the leadership of the UK P&I Club’s specialist people claims syndicate in 1999. In 2004, Andrew was appointed Operations Director for P&I in Europe and subsequently Chief Operating Officer of Thomas Miller P&I Ltd in 2007.
Based in Hong Kong, Andrew also oversees and directs the work of the other Thomas Miller offices in the region: Singapore, Shanghai, Beijing and Sydney.
Daniel is the Regional Director for the Club’s activities in Greece and Cyprus. He is also the Club Manager for Thomas Miller Defence. Daniel joined Thomas Miller in 1992. From 1998-2002 he headed the Clubs’ local Greek ofﬁce. In 2002, Daniel moved back to London as Senior Director of Claims before becoming Club Manager and Regional Director. Daniel returned to Greece in 2014.
Paul is a barrister with a master's degree in maritime law. Before joining Thomas Miller in 1996, Paul spent five years working with Greek and Norwegian shipowners. Paul is a Director of Thomas Miller Defence and is the Area Director for Japan.
Stuart, a Master Mariner, joined Thomas Miller’s Loss Prevention department in 2014. Prior to this he worked as casualty investigator for a leading shipping law firm and was at sea on a variety of different ship types including crude oil tankers, freight ferries, passenger ships and offshore drilling units, where he sailed as Barge Master.
Paul joined Thomas Miller after working for another International Group club in Greece. Paul is responsible for the UK Club's regulatory compliance and the running of the Club's secretariat.
Jeff joined Thomas Miller in December 2011 having spent 11 years working as a solicitor with a major London maritime law firm. As well as being a qualified solicitor, Jeff has 18 years seagoing experience on a wide range of ship types, predominantly oil and petrochemical tankers. He has been a Senior Claims Director since January 2013, but was appointed Global Technical Claims Director in 2017.
Jeff represents the UK Club on International Group (IG) sub-committees for Salvage & Wreck Removal and Pilotage.
Dr WU Chao has a Ph.D in law from Paris University (Sorbonne). As Legal director for Thomas Miller P&I Ltd (UK P&I Club), she is responsible for giving general legal advice, legal aspects of cover for Members' contractual arrangements, the legal aspects of P&I Club documentation, and the Rules and Bye-Laws of the Club, as well as the legal aspects of the Pooling Agreement and of Club’s reinsurance contracts.
Chao is part of the Senior Management Team and represents the UK Club on various subcommittees and working groups of the International Group, including those on Pooling Agreement, Pollution, P&I War Risks, Confirmation of Entry, IOPC Fund and Pro-rating, and others. Chao has been the chairperson of the IG Pooling Agreement Subcommittee since 2009.
Chao has been a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars worldwide over the past 22 years, and is the author of many publications, including two books for which she was awarded prizes by the British Insurance Law Association, UK and by the Institut Economique du Droit de la Mer, Monaco. She is also a recognized authority on international marine environmental law, and formerly worked for Thomas Miller (Americas), where she also became an authority on US environmental law.
