The Club’s virtual People Claims team is led by Senior Claims Director, John Turner. The team is on hand to advise on all P&I/Defence matters relating to crew, stevedores, passengers, stowaways, refugees and third party visitors involving injury, illness, death, drug smuggling, immigration fines, loss of or damage to effects of crew/others, occupational disease and ITF disputes.
John worked for a ship agent, a shipowner and as Club correspondent in Ireland before joining Thomas Miller P&I in 1987. He currently manages London Syndicate 3, the people claims syndicate, and is responsible for the team’s operational performance and service delivery. He also sits on the Senior Claims Directors’ team, a team of senior claims executives who have the task of working alongside case executives on the resolution of major claims which account for 70 per cent of the Club’s claims payments.
Throughout his career at Thomas Miller, John has worked closely with Members involved in the cruise and ferry sectors and has particular expertise in handling passenger ship casualties and cruise curtailment claims.
Tony has specialised in handling people related claims and enquiries within the P&I environment since 1989. He joined Thomas Miller in April 2004 and was promoted to the role of Senior Claims Director in 2011.
Tony has gained a significant understanding and knowledge in this specialised and increasingly complex area, handling a wide variety of people related claims and enquiries, including contract review work, whilst he also attends and has presented at various industry conferences and seminars. In particular, Tony works closely with our Members in Japan, Greece, Croatia, Scandinavia and UK.
He represents the Club on the International Group Personal Injury Sub-Committee (IGPISC), having first joined this Sub-Committee in 1999, when working for another London based P&I Club.
Tony has also gained significant knowledge and understanding of the Philippine legal system and the handling of Philippine crew claims, and has been the Chairman of the IGPISC’s Philippine Working Group, since its formation in October 2007, and acts as the main conduit between our correspondents; the Manning Industry; Employers’ Representative Bodies; and the IGPISC. He has regularly travelled to the Philippines since 2008, on behalf of the Club and International Group. Tony is also a member of the IGPISC’s Contracts Working Group.
Neil joined Thomas Miller in 1992 having completed his studies in Business and Finance. He initially worked in underwriting before transferring to the personal injury syndicate where he handled a variety of people related claims with a particular focus on Members based in Turkey. He was also responsible for the account management of a large UK based crew manager.
In 2003, Neil transferred to the IT department to manage projects associated with the Club’s award winning electronic claims management system. He then left Thomas Miller to work as an IT project manager for some of the leading London Market insurers.
Neil returned to P&I in 2011 joining the personal injury team of another London based P&I Club before re-joining Thomas Miller in November 2013 where he continues to handle a broad range of people related claims concentrating on Members based in Germany.
Victoria joined Thomas Miller in 2008. She is a qualified solicitor and prior to joining the company, worked for a City law firm for 10 years, where she mainly handled personal injury litigation.
As a member of the people claims syndicate, Victoria handles a wide variety of people related claims, focusing particularly on crew and passenger claims for French and US members. She also handles occupational disease, stowaway claims and claims arising from stevedore injuries.
Genevieve joined Thomas Miller in 2007 having worked as a Deck Officer in the Merchant Navy for four years where she served on cruise ships up to the rank of Second Officer. She has a BSc (Hons) degree in Merchant Ship Operations and a Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Law. As a member of the dedicated people claims syndicate, Genevieve handles a variety of people related claims for a wide selection of the Club's Members, with a particular focus on our European Members. She also has particular expertise in handling all types of claims for the Club's cruise ship Members, including passenger ship casualties and cruise curtailments.
Yvonne joined Thomas Miller in 1985 having completed a Diploma in Business Studies and the Chartered Insurance Institute Diploma in Insurance Business and Marine and Aviation Insurance. She began her career in the Finance Department before transferring to claims. She has been a member of the personal injury syndicate since 1991 handling all types of people related claims for a wide selection of the Club’s Members. Yvonne specialises in handling occupational disease claims and is a member of the International Group Personal Injury Occupational Disease Sub-Committee. She has organised a number Occupational Disease seminars for the Club’s members and claims handlers from other P&I clubs.
Karen joined Thomas Miller in 1977 as a Filing Clerk in Syndicate 4. She later became a syndicate secretary, working principally for Lance Hebert.
In 1989, she transferred to the personal injury syndicate where she worked for Phil Nichols, the syndicate manager. During her time working with Phil Nichols her varied career included organising the UK Club’s Cruise Conferences, the UK P&I Club Correspondent Network, the Service Department and the Quality Team assisting with the introduction of the LRQA EQS System.
In 2011 Karen returned to the People Claims Department as Team Secretary where she continues to assist the Senior Claim Directors in addition to her role as P&I file audit co-ordinator. Karen also provides secretarial support to Synidcate L2.
Van worked in London for Rethymnis & Kulukundis before joining Maritime Services, the UK Club’s correspondents in 1974. Van joined (TM(H) in 1997. Van handles personal injury and people cases for H1 Members.
Eleni joined Thomas Miller in 2013. She is a Greek qualiﬁed lawyer and has an LLM in Maritime Law. Before joining London Syndicate 3 as a trainee Claims Executive, Eleni gained work experience in a Greek law ofﬁce specialising in maritime law. In her previous role in Syndicate H1, she handled people related claims. She has recently moved to London and is currently a claims handler for Syndicate J1. Eleni speaks Greek and Spanish.
Eva joined TM(H) in February 2016 prior to which she gained 14 years of working experience in ship owning and ship management companies based in Greece. She has a BSc(Hons) in Shipping, an MBA and MSc in International Banking and Finance. In her present role in Syndicate H1, she handles people related claims.
Dee practiced law in New York City for 17 years with a well-known maritime law firm focusing on general cargo and bodily injury claims. She joined TMA in December 2007 as a generalist, with a focus on bodily injury claims.
She is a member of the Bodily Injury Team.
