Alec joined Thomas Miller in November 2010 having completed an LLM in Maritime & Commercial law. Prior to law school he studied Economics & Spanish. In London, he worked with a wide variety of EU and Swiss based Members, ranging from conventional Owners through to large Charterers and trading houses, handling all types of P&I and FDD disputes. In November 2014 he moved to Athens to service the UK Club’s Greek membership and returned to London in January 2018 to develop further & expand the UK Club’s Charterers book of business and product ranges.
Along with strong commercial and operational expertise, Alec has extensive experience resolving issues concerning the shipment of agricultural commodities as well as a proven track record in casualty management and salvage operations.
Alec is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and holds various trade association, including GAFTA, qualifications. He is a regular speaker & presenter at seminars, industry events and courses.
Before joining the Club, Alex was a senior lawyer at an international shipping law firm. In addition, Alex spent two years, on secondment, at a leading Lloyd’s of London and Lloyd’s Asia syndicate – primarily dealing with people, hull and machinery and cargo claims. Alex has been in Singapore since 2016.
Alexandra joined Thomas Miller in 1994. She is a qualiﬁed Greek and English solicitor. She joined TM(H) in 1998 and handles all types of P&I claims and FD&D disputes. Alexandra is a Senior Claims Director for Thomas Miller Defence and P&I.
Andrew brings more than twenty years experience of P&I management and claims experience to the Hong Kong team. A law graduate, he joined Thomas Miller’s London office in 1991 specialising in handling personal injury and other people claims, taking the leadership of the UK P&I Club’s specialist people claims syndicate in 1999. In 2004, Andrew was appointed Operations Director for P&I in Europe and subsequently Chief Operating Officer of Thomas Miller P&I Ltd in 2007.
Based in Hong Kong, Andrew also oversees and directs the work of the other Thomas Miller offices in the region: Singapore, Shanghai, Beijing and Sydney.
Andrew has worked for Thomas Miller since 1995 holding various management and underwriting roles. Prior to his role as Senior Underwriting Director, Andrew worked for the TT Club, also managed by Thomas Miller.
Andrew has worked and lived in London, Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong and brings a depth of shipping and logistics underwriting experience. He served as Regional Director for Asia Pacific from 2006 to 2010, and on his return to London became the Regional Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Before joining Thomas Miller, Andrew worked as a cargo underwriter in the London commercial market. He has also worked and lived in Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain.
Andrew works with Members worldwide, with particular focus on Germany and the Middle East.
Ansuman Ghosh, a Marine Engineer with the UK Club's Loss Prevention department based in Singapore. Ansuman sailed on various vessel types up to the rank of Chief Engineer. In 2006 he came ashore, working as a Superintendent and Classification Society Principal Surveyor, Regional Lead Auditor. Prior to joining Thomas Miller, he was Technical Head at a ship-owning and service company.
Ben started in early 2015 having previously worked as a claims executive at another IG P&I Club. Prior to that he was a marine claims adjuster advising on H&M and General Average claims at a leading average adjusting firm. He has a degree in International History and Politics and completed both the Graduate Diploma in Law course and LPC.
Cameron Holmes joined TMA in January 2019 after working with various maritime firms. He is a graduate from Tulane University where he received his Certificate of Concentration in Maritime Law. Cameron is fluent in French and proficient in Spanish.
Captain Sekine joined Thomas Miller as Senior Loss Prevention Executive in 2019. He has a vast amount of experience within the maritime industry, including Captain and Managing Corporate Officer in a leading international shipping line and more recently, Managing Director and President at marine consultancy firm, Japan Marine Science. He is also a Lecturer at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology and the Japan Coast Guard Academy, as well a Visiting Professor at Kobe University, Japan
Kosta is a Greek Master Mariner with significant seagoing experience on-board Bulk Carriers and Cruise Ships. Prior to joining Thomas Miller’s Hellas office in December, 2019 he worked as Claims Manager for a local hull insurer, garnering more than 10 years of experience within the marine insurance industry. Kosta is certified by Lloyds Register of Shipping as an ISM and ISPS Internal Auditor. He deals with Loss Prevention related matters and operational enquiries for local Members, and he also conducts crew seminars.
Caroline joined Thomas Miller in 1999 and is now a full time claims handler for the Club's Members in Japan. Caroline also manages and is responsible for the Club's Logistics Claims Handling System and the performance of the Regional Claims Centres.
Caroline joined Thomas Miller Hellas in 2018. She holds a degree in Law and a Masters in Maritime Law. She previously worked for two shipping law firms and also in the legal department for a ship owning company based in Greece. Caroline handles all types of P&I and FD&D claims.
Cedric studied law before joining Thomas Miller in 1996 and TM(H) in June 2000. As a senior claims executive he handled all types of P&I claims and FD&D disputes, before becoming a Director and more recently a Senior Claims Director.
Christopher oversees the Club’s underwriting policies and operations. He joined Thomas Miller in 2001, and has worked with P&I since 1989. From 2002-2007 he was based in Hong Kong to head the Managers’ operations in Asia-Pacific, working closely with Members in the region. Christopher previously held a senior claims role.
Christos joined TM(H) in February, 2015 prior to which time he was with a ship management company based in Greece. Christos is a qualiﬁed lawyer both in England and in Greece. He handles all types of P&I claims and FD&D disputes.
Claire first joined the UK Club Claims department in February 2011 and then subsequently moved to P&I Underwriting in September 2011. Claire originally worked in the European and Americas team before assisting with the Asia Pacific Members since 2014 as a Senior Underwriting Technician. Claire is currently working through the P&I Qualifications and holds the CII Certificate of Insurance.
Damon is an attorney and joins the TMA BI team having practiced for 11 years with varied experience of marine bodily injury claims. He is a graduate from Tulane Law School where he obtained a Certificate of Concentration in Maritime Law.
Daniel is the Regional Director for the Club’s activities in Greece and Cyprus. He is also the Club Manager for Thomas Miller Defence. Daniel joined Thomas Miller in 1992. From 1998-2002 he headed the Clubs’ local Greek ofﬁce. In 2002, Daniel moved back to London as Senior Director of Claims before becoming Club Manager and Regional Director. Daniel returned to Greece in 2014.
Dingjing Huang joined Thomas Miller in 2015 after finishing his PhD degree in Maritime Law. Prior to his underwriting role, Dingjing was supporting both the Underwriting and Legal departments with a particular focus on Chinese business and legal issues. Dingjing is now an Underwriter, supporting the Club's Members in the Asia Pacific region.
Do Young joined Thomas Miller in 1997 after completing a master of business administration degree. He studied naval architecture in Korea and worked for a shipbroking firm in London. Do Young looks after the Club's Korean Members.
Eva joined TM(H) in February 2016 prior to which she gained 14 years of working experience in ship owning and ship management companies based in Greece. She has a BSc(Hons) in Shipping, an MBA and MSc in International Banking and Finance, as well as a LLM in Maritime Law . In her present role in Syndicate H1, she handles people related claims.
Filip qualified as a solicitor in 2015 at one of the leading London shipping law firms where, prior to his legal training, he was a senior Risk & Compliance officer. He joined Thomas Miller in December 2015 and is handling a variety of defence and P&I cases.
Fumiaki Izawa joined UK Club’s Japan Branch since its inception in 1989, and advises Members regarding all types of claims. Before he joined the Branch, he worked for the Club’s correspondents, ISS P&I Japan.
Gemma Hone joined the UK Club in January 2013. Gemma started working on the Far East team, assisting Paul Pelling and his team. She moved internally to support the Greece team and now works alongside Paul Collier, James Petrie, Tania Bourla and Lily Soesan.
Before joining Thomas Miller Genevieve worked as a Deck Officer in the Merchant Navy for four years where she served on cruise ships up to the rank of Second Officer. She has a BSc (Hons) degree in Merchant Ship Operations and a Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Law. Genevieve specialises in people related claims in EMEA1 for a wide selection of the Club's Members. She also has particular expertise in handling all types of claims for the Club's cruise ship Members, including passenger ship casualties and cruise curtailments.
George joined Thomas Miller as a claims handler in 2015 having previously obtained a First Class Honours LLB as an undergraduate in London. He handles an increasingly diverse range of P&I and some FD&D matters for the Greek, Italian and UK based Members
Hannah joined the Underwriting department in June 2020 to work as an Underwriting Technician supporting the Club's Members in the Asia Pacific region. She previously worked as a Team Secretary for the Claims Syndicates.
Hannah is currently studying for her P&I Q.
Helen joined Thomas Miller in April 2005 from a Hong Kong shipping company. She worked for a P&I correspondent in North America and an insurance company in China before relocating to Hong Kong. Helen is a graduate of Dalian Maritime University, and has an LLM from Southampton University.
Helena qualified as a solicitor with a leading London maritime firm in 1999 and spent two years working as a UK qualified solicitor in Sydney, Australia before returning to private practice in London. Helena moved in-house to another IG P&I Club in 2004 where she dealt with a wide range of FD&D and P&I claims before joining Thomas Miller in 2018.
Jamie Hayday joined the UK P&I Club on the 26th September 2016 as an Underwriting Technician having worked in the Aviation department for one year after leaving school. Jamie is currently an Underwriting Technician supporting the Greece team.
Janice joined Underwriting in December 2014, providing support to the Europe and Americas Team. Prior to that Janice worked at Thomas Miller for a number of years in the European Regional Support Team where she was a Communications Assistant and then a Senior Communications Assistant for the P&I and FDD Claims teams.
Jim joined Thomas Miller in March 1977 and was initially based in the Cockfosters office. He then transferred to the London Office Personal Injuries Claims Syndicate in 1981. From 1982 Jim has held various roles within the Underwriting Department, currently having two main roles as both Policy Underwriter for the UK Defence Club and as part of the Senior Management Team. For P&I Jim is one of the Senior Underwriting Directors and the Underwriter for our Italian and Italian based Monaco Members. Jim is also involved in South Korea and Turkey.
Karolina joined the UK Club in January 2017. She handles P&I and FD&D claims for Syndicate EMEA 2. She is a qualified English solicitor and Merchant Navy Deck Officer of the Watch Unlimited. She served as a Deck Cadet on variety of cargo and passenger ships worldwide. She speaks fluent Polish and basic German.
Kim joined TMA in 1991. She specialises in handling personal injury and cargo claims. She has previous experience of sixteen years with a leading American steamship company.
Taylor joined TMA in 2018 after working with various maritime firms. She is a graduate from Tulane University, and is fluent in Spanish. Taylor is a member of the Bodily Injury team and specializes in Bodily Injury claims.
Lance joined Thomas Miller in August 1977 as a P&I claims handler. During his career he has worked extensively with Members based in the German, Greek, Turkish and South American markets. Lance has been a Senior Claims Director since 1997, he specialises in oil pollution and major casualty response, and speaks the Portuguese and Spanish languages.
Lance continues to hold responsibility for the Club’s long standing Brazilian business interests and relationships since 1985. This responsibility included a nine year spell working in the Club’s Miami office, where he enjoyed a period as office manager, and Lance has also overseen responsibility for the Club’s wider South American business interests for 20 years, until that office relocated to New Jersey in 2005.
Laura has been with Thomas Miller since 2012 and in her current role as a claims executive since 2014. Laura has since worked exclusively with the German membership and handles a variety of P&I Claims. In particular, Laura specialises in handling container claims, and has expanded her knowledge through a structured training programme particularly focusing on speciality reefer containers.
Lyall joined Thomas Miller in June 2012 from the shipping department of a leading London solicitor, where he was a Senior Associate.
Lyall is dual qualified as a lawyer in both England and Australia. Lyall has over 15 years’ experience handling a wide range of P&I and Defence related claims and disputes. Lyall also has considerable experience with piracy and war risk insurance having been the Claims and Legal Manager for Hellenic War Risks Club and UK War Risks Club for 4 years. His main responsibilities are claims management, claims consultancy, general claims advice and is part of the Professional Supplier Management team.
Marc spent four years at the Bar and a further two years handling Defence cases with another P&I Club. He joined Thomas Miller in 1998 and deals with both P&I and Defence matters. Marc is a Senior Claims Director for Thomas Miller Defence.
Marina is an attorney and a graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. She has a US CG licence as a Third Mate . She worked for a Shipowner in operations on tankers / bulkers and has also worked for ABS . She was in the Coast Guard reserve as a marine inspector.
Mark joined Thomas Miller in the summer of 2015. He is an ex-mariner who spent six years at sea, sailing up to the rank of 2nd navigational ofﬁcer. Mark is an English qualiﬁed solicitor who previously worked in the post ﬁxture department of a Malaysian shipowner as well as for another International Group P&I Club. Mark handles all types of P&I claims and FD&D disputes for H1 Members.
Mark is a former Merchant Navy deck officer sailing on variety of vessel types. Mark joined us from a leading London Law firm where he was an Admiralty Manager, attending and investigating casualties including salvage, fires, cargo explosions, collisions etc. Mark is a Senior Claims Director in EMEA1.
Masaaki Hishiki joined UK Club’s Japan Branch in October 2017, having completed 9 years in the service of the Club’s correspondents, ISS P&I Japan. Before joining ISS, he worked in South Korea for cargo export business. He speaks Japanese and Korean.
Matthew joined Thomas Miller in 2004. He is a Senior Underwriting Director, supporting the Club's Members in the Asia Pacific region, with a particular focus on Japan.
Mike Carroll joined Signum Services after retiring from the Metropolitan Police in November 2006. He was a career detective for 30 years, serving in various departments at New Scotland Yard. He specialised in serious and organised crime, including the investigation of armed robberies.
Michael joined Thomas Miller in January 2017. He has a legal background having previously worked in shipping law firms in London and Greece. He handles all types of P&I claims and FD&D disputes.
Neil joined Thomas Miller in 1992 having completed his studies in Business and Finance. He initially worked in underwriting before transferring to the personal injury syndicate where he handled a variety of people related claims with a particular focus on Members based in Turkey. He was also responsible for the account management of a large UK based crew manager.
In 2003, Neil transferred to the IT department to manage projects associated with the Club’s award winning electronic claims management system. He then left Thomas Miller to work as an IT project manager for some of the leading London Market insurers.
Neil returned to P&I in 2011 joining the personal injury team of another London based P&I Club before re-joining Thomas Miller in November 2013 where he continues to handle a broad range of people related claims concentrating on Members based in Germany.
Nigel joined Thomas Miller in 1981, working in a claims syndicate for members from Japan, Greece, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. He became a Director of Thomas Miller P&I in 1986, a Syndicate Manager in 1990, and was elected to the Thomas Miller partnership in 1994. Other areas of responsibility over the years have included UK Club's Rules and Bye-Laws, Environmental Liability, Claims Policy, recommendations on Club Policy in relation to numerous industry issues, Loss Prevention, Captive Reinsurance, and more recently the 2012/13 re-structuring of the UK Club.
He has been Deputy Chairman of the UK Club’s P&I management operation since September 2004.
Nigel represents the UK Club at IG Managers’ meetings, has served on many International Group (IG) sub-committees, and has represented the IG at many international meetings. He currently chairs the IG’s Ships' Standards subcommittee, Maritime Security sub-committee, and LNG working group. He is a former director of ITOPF and a current trustee of its pension scheme.
Nigel joined Thomas Miller in 2003 as an actuary from PwC, a big 4 professional services firm where he specialised in analytics and M&A. He became Chief Actuary in 2008, providing actuarial services to all insurance entities managed by Thomas Miller.
With effect from 1 June 2018, Nigel was appointed Chief Financial Officer for the UK P&I Club. He was also appointed as a Director of the Club’s parent company, UK Europe, with effect from the same date.
Oli is a qualified lawyer in England and has worked for major maritime law firms in London and Singapore specializing in shipping. Oli specializes in FD&D matters and will handle P&I and Defence claims.
After five years as a P&I broker Paul joined the Club’s Underwriting Department in 2001, supporting the European and North American markets. In 2004 he transferred to underwriting the Club’s Greek Membership, and is the Senior Underwriting Director for the Greek and Monaco regions.
Paul joined Thomas Miller after working for another International Group club in Greece. Paul is responsible for the UK Club's regulatory compliance and the running of the Club's secretariat.
Peter Jones is a Physics BSc (Hons) graduate from the University of Bath and a CII Chartered Insurer. Prior to joining Thomas Miller’s underwriting department, Peter was handling P&I claims, having formerly worked as a Claims Adjuster in the non-marine market. He now supports the UK Club’s members in the Asia Pacific region, having previously supported members in Europe, Middle East and North and South America.
Philip has a degree in nautical studies and an MBA. He joined Thomas Miller in 1986 and was an Area Director before moving to Greece in October 2002. He returned to the London office in November 2008 where he became the Syndicate Manager for LS2, with responsibility for overseeing the service provision to the European Membership. Philip was the Club's Deputy Claims Director, before becoming the Joint Chief Operating Officer in December 2016.
With effect from 2 March 2018, Phil was appointed Chief Operating Officer for the UK P&I Club.
Philippa joined Thomas Miller in 2014. She previously practised as a solicitor for 8 years at an international shipping law firm based in London. Prior to becoming a lawyer, she studied Mandarin at undergraduate degree level and she has also spent 3 years working as a solicitor in Shanghai.
Rafael joined the Club in August 2016. Rafael is a lawyer from Venezuela with LL.M degree in Admiralty and Maritime Law from Tulane University (New Orleans, LA). He came from a law firm in Venezuela where he used to practice maritime law, and oil and gas law for 16 years in cases involving several jurisdictions in Latin America. He currently handles P&I and FD&D claims in the Americas mainly focusing in South and Central America for the Members of the UK Club.
Rafael is fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish (native speaker).
Richard joined Thomas Miller in 1985 having previously worked with solicitors. His work has been with South American, London-based Greek, Monegasque, Italian and Spanish Members.
Saidul Alom joined PEME from the European Region Service Team in 2004. Saidul provides administrative support to the PEME programme and is responsible for liaison with the approved clinics on financial billing matters and ensuring prompt payment of all clinic fees
Sarah joined Thomas Miller in 1990. She is an Underwriter within the Europe and Americas team and is responsible for the day to day underwriting of Germany, Croatia, UK and North Africa. She also assists on a number of European and American Cruise accounts.
Seán is a solicitor and, previously, an advocate who joined Thomas Miller after working for another P&I Club with a special interest in Far Eastern/Japanese members. Seán has a masters degree in maritime law and is a director of Thomas Miller.
Sophia joined Thomas Miller in 1992 and from 1994 worked as a claims handler dealing mainly with French and Spanish members. In 2004 Sophia became the Crew Health Programme Director.
As part of her work in the Crew Health Programme, Sophia has undertaken a large number of clinic audits, implemented the standard medical form and clinic guidelines. She has also led the scheme through the largest period of growth and development with a doubling of approved clinic facilities and a four fold member increase. Sophia is a Director of Thomas Miller & Co. Ltd.
Stephen joined Thomas Miller in February 2012, following a career of 24 years as a P&I broker. Prior to this he spent 4 years with The Through Transport Club as an Underwriter.
Stuart, a Master Mariner, joined Thomas Miller’s Loss Prevention department in 2014. Prior to this he worked as casualty investigator for a leading shipping law firm and was at sea on a variety of different ship types including crude oil tankers, freight ferries, passenger ships and offshore drilling units, where he sailed as Barge Master.
Sue joined the Underwriting department in 1985. She is the Underwriter primarily for Cyprus, Turkey, and Italy. She is a Member of the FMC, Blue Cards and Confirmation of Entry Sub-committees.
Her previous role was the Underwriting Operations Director.
Susan Lee is a Claims Executive for P&I and FD&D. Susan is an attorney and came to TMA from a New York maritime law firm. She handles cargo claims, arbitrations and charter party disputes.
Susanne joined Thomas Miller in 1995 and was Syndicate Manager for the Northern European Membership before joining the Defence Management Team where she is now Deputy Club Manager / COO. Susanne is also the P&I Regional Director for the EMEA region.
Tania joined Thomas Miller in October 2014. She is an Underwriter supporting the Club's Members in Greece and the Mediterranean area. Prior to joining the Club, Tania was working for a major London marine insurance broker, dealing also with H&M and War Risk insurances, having previously worked in Piraeus for a H&M insurer. Tania has completed the Advanced Diploma in Insurance and is a Chartered Insurer with the Chartered Insurance Institute.
Victoria is a qualified solicitor and prior to joining Thomas Miller, worked for a City law firm for 10 years, where she mainly handled personal injury litigation. Victoria has a wealth of experience in handling a wide variety of people related claims, focusing particularly on crew and passenger claims in EMEA1.
William joined Thomas Miller in 2012. He is an Underwriter on the Europe team, servicing European and American Members, having previously worked in the Asia Pacific team. Prior to joining Thomas Miller in 2012, William worked in the Lloyd's market as a Marine insurance broker.
Adam is a qualified as a solicitor. After working for another P&I Club, Adam headed the legal and insurance department of a leading ship operating company for 7 years before joining Thomas Miller.
Aki joined Thomas Miller in 2004. She has been based in Thomas Miller offices in London, New Jersey and Tokyo before moving to Singapore office in 2020. Aki is a qualified solicitor having worked in a major law firm in London and is currently based in Singapore handling all types of P&I and FDD claims. Aki speaks Japanese and is a director of Thomas Miller.
Alan is currently the Chief Claims Officer for the UK Club. He joined Thomas Miller in 2005 from a leading firm of maritime lawyers in London. Between 2007 and 2010 he held overall responsibility for management of UK Defence Club claims before moving to the P&I Club claims management function in 2010. Alan sits on the Bimco Documentary Committee, and chairs the International Group Bills of Lading and Occupational Diseases subcommittees.
Alan is a qualified solicitor with 20 years experience at an international law firm specialising in shipping. He has a degree in maritime business and law and 14 years experience at sea up to the rank of Chief Officer working on a wide variety of ship types.
Alison is a qualified South African solicitor. She specialised in Maritime Law at a leading South African law firm for four years before joining Thomas Miller in 2007 and handles both P&I and Defence claims for the Members in EMEA1.
Amy Lovseth joined Thomas Miller (Americas) as a claims executive in June 2004 after completing a LL.M. in Maritime Law from the University of Oslo in Norway. While in Norway, Amy worked as a trainee at Wiikborg Rein and in the law department at Norsk Hydro.
Amy was made Vice president in 2010 and handles claims for both the UK P&I Club and the UK Defence Club. She joined LS2 from New Jersey and has recently reloacted to our Hong Kong office.
Andrew joined Thomas Miller as Financial Controller of UK P&I Club from Big 4 accounting firm KPMG, where he had specialised in the insurance sector. He was Chief Financial Officer for the Club from 2014 to 2018. In June 2018, Andrew was appointed Chief Executive Officer for the UK P&I Club.
Anuj Joined Thomas Miller in 2012 . A master mariner with extensive sailing and command experience on oil tankers and other vessels, Anuj has also worked as a superintendent in a technical management company. He is handling the loss prevention and risk management aspects of the local members and provides technical support to the Singapore team.
Chris joined Thomas Miller in March 2001, after a long seagoing career in all types of tankers.
Joined Shell Tankers in 1969 as cadet and sailed with them until 1977 rising to Second Officer, then joined Silver Line (V.Ships UK) and sailed in Chemical Tankers and LPG vessels.
From 1983 until December 2000 he served as master for V Ships in LPG, Chemical and Product carriers, including 1 special OBO.
Chris is a Fellow of the Nautical Institute and a qualified Lead Auditor for ISM.
Markus Westphal joined Thomas Miller in 2014 as a Risk Assessor. He previously worked on general cargo vessels, bulk carriers and container vessels, rising to the rank of Master in 2000. As a junior officer, Markus served on salvage tugs and was involved in several salvage operations off the South African coast as well as the development of the Mossgas project off Mosselbay.
During his time at Safmarine, Markus was involved with the introduction of the ISM code as well as the ISPS code, his vessels being audited externally and internally.
Costas joined TM(H) in July 2000, having previously worked for a Piraeus shipowning company. He has a diploma and post-graduate diploma in Shipping. Costas specialises primarily in P&I claims.
Costas joined Thomas Miller (Hellas) Ltd. in 2015 after having completed his BA in Business Administration. Costas has completed a Certificate in Shipping at the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. He handles cargo claims and people related claims.
David Thompson joined Signum Services in January 2013 following his retirement from the Metropolitan Police. In his 30 year career as a detective David specialised in the investigation of serious and complex crimes and served at various locations throughout London and at New Scotland Yard.
Debbie has been working for Thomas Miller for 30 years. She previously worked in Personal Injury but now works within the J1 team as a Claims Executive. She also has responsibility for the enhancement and development of the Club’s Claims Handling systems and special service projects.
Dee practiced law in New York City for 17 years with a well-known maritime law firm focusing on general cargo and bodily injury claims. She joined TMA in December 2007 as a generalist, with a focus on bodily injury claims.
She is a member of the Bodily Injury Team.
After completing her master and Ph.D in law in Paris University (Sorbonne), Dr WU Chao joined Thomas Miller P&I Ltd (UK P&I Club) in 1994. Holding the position of Legal Director, she is responsible for the Club's general legal advice, legal aspects of cover for Members' contractual arrangements, the legal aspects of P&I Club documentation, and the Rules and Bye-Laws of the Club, as well as the Pooling Agreement and the legal aspects of the Club’s reinsurance contracts.
Chao has been a member of the Senior Management Team since 2003 and represents the UK Club on various subcommittees and working groups of the International Group, including those on Pooling Agreement, Pollution, P&I War Risks, Confirmation of Entry, IOPC Fund and Pro-rating, and others. Chao has chaired the IG Pooling Agreement Subcommittee since 2009, and the Co-Assured subcommittee since 2017.
Chao has been a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars worldwide over the past 22 years, and is the author of many publications, including two books for which she was awarded prizes by the British Insurance Law Association, UK and by the Institut Economique du Droit de la Mer, Monaco. She is also a recognized authority on international marine pollution liability law, and formerly worked for Thomas Miller (Americas), where she also became an authority on US environmental law.
Duncan joined Thomas Miller in 2000 working as a Technician in the P&I Underwriting department
He progressed to a Senior Technician/client facing role primarily dealing with the US, UK and German areas as well as specialising in the Clubs cruise business.
Today Duncan is responsible for analysing the needs of the P&I Club, providing information to key organisations and developing new systems and procedures to meet the changing requirements of the industry.
Edgar joined Thomas Miller in 1994 after graduating with a social science degree. Having been a Claims Executive in Hong Kong for six years handling UK Club and TT Club claims, he has become Thomas Miller's Shanghai Representative performing both a claims advisory and marketing liason role.
Efcharis joined Thomas Miller in 2013. She has a double degree in English law and French law, and has completed the Legal Practice Course. She is also a Member of the Institute of Chartered Ship Brokers. Her previous work experience includes legal work in law ﬁrms, specialising in shipping law, in both Greece and the UK. Efcharis handles P&I and Defence claims for H1 Members. She is ﬂuent in English, French and Greek.
Eleni joined Thomas Miller in 2013. She is a Greek qualiﬁed lawyer and has an LLM in Maritime Law. Before joining London Syndicate 3 as a trainee Claims Executive, Eleni gained work experience in a Greek law ofﬁce specialising in maritime law. In her previous role in Syndicate H1, she handled people related claims. She has recently moved to London and is currently a claims handler for Syndicate J1. Eleni speaks Greek and Spanish.
Felix spent ten years handling claims for shipowners, a charterer and a freight forwarder in Hong Kong before joining Thomas Miller. He holds a degree and a diploma in transport management, and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Transport.
Francesco is an English qualified solicitor and has worked and trained at a leading London shipping firm for nearly nine years, where he dealt with both FD&D and P&I related claims. Francesco is fluent in both English and Italian. Francesco joined Thomas Miller in June 2016 and is a Senior Claims Executive, providing P&I and Defence claims and advisory services to Members in EMEA 1.
George Radu joined TMA in 2007 after spending 19 years at a major container shipping line including 10 years as Claims Manager. He handles all types of P&I Claims.
Georgina joined the UK Club on 11th August 2014 having worked previously at another P&I Club. She now works in the Underwriting department as an Underwriting Technician on the Far East Asia team assisting Paul Pelling, Matthew Bayman, Peter Jones and Dingjing Huang. Georgina is currently working towards her CII Certificate in Insurance.
Hugo Wynn-Williams – Chairman of Thomas Miller Holdings Ltd., Chairman of Thomas Miller P&I (Europe) Ltd (the Managers of the UK P&I Club).
Hugo joined Thomas Miller in 1978. A member of the Thomas Miller Holdings Board since incorporation in 1999, Hugo was elected Chairman of Thomas Miller Holdings in June 2009 in which capacity he also has oversight of a number of Thomas Miller’s international businesses. He is also Chairman of the Thomas Miller Agency and Insurance Services division; Thomas Miller Claims Management and a number of other subsidiaries of Thomas Miller. As Chairman of Thomas Miller Holdings, Hugo leads the TMH Board in the formulation, setting and achievement of the strategic goals and objectives of the TMH Group. As Chairman of Thomas Miller P&I he provides leadership to, and management of, the Board of the Club liaising between the Board and the Managers alongside the CEO, ensuring it operates effectively achieving its strategic objectives.
Jacqueline is a qualified barrister and solicitor handling FDD and P&I cases for many years. She is Legal Services Manager at Thomas Miller, editor of the Club’s legal publications and also a member of Thomas Miller’s Legal and Environmental Team. Jacqueline speaks Malay, French and Hokkien.
A graduate in English and International Relations, James initial career was with a major Chinese shipowner serving in both China and the UK. Having acquired an MBA at Cranfield he was head of strategic planning before joining the Hong Kong office of a European container operator as business development director. Joining in 2012 from an investment group, James brings more than 20 years shipping experience to the team.
James is an Underwriting Director, dealing principally with business from Greece and Korea. Prior to joining Thomas Miller, James was a P&I/FDD Underwriter in the commercial market with a focus on European, Asian and specialist craft business. This followed two years in the London/Lloyd’s non-marine market.
Jeff joined Thomas Miller in 2011 having spent 11 years working as a solicitor with a major London maritime law firm. As well as being a qualified solicitor, Jeff is a Master Mariner with 18 years seagoing experience on a wide range of ship types, predominantly oil and petrochemical tankers. He became a Senior Claims Director in January 2013 and was appointed Global Technical Claims Director in 2017.
Jeff represents the UK Club on International Group (IG) sub-committees for Salvage & Wreck Removal and Pilotage.
Jennifer Porter recently joined Thomas Miller Americas’ San Francisco office and is a member of our BI Team. Jennifer is originally from California and sailed competitively for Stanford University during her college years. She then earned her law degree at University of San Francisco Law School where she was an editor for the Maritime Law Journal. Prior to joining Thomas Miller, she was a partner at a West Coast maritime defense firm, where she specialized in longshore and crew bodily injury matters.
Jim qualified as a solicitor in 1995 and has been involved in maritime law for almost the whole of his subsequent career. He has previously been a partner in a London niche shipping law firm, and has also worked in the Piraeus office of a major law firm, mainly advising Greek owners. Jim is a Senior Claims Director in the UK Defence Club, and in addition to management of his own claims advises junior colleagues on claims strategy in FD&D disputes.
John worked for a ship agent, a shipowner and as Club correspondent in Ireland before joining Thomas Miller P&I in 1987. He is currently in EMEA 1 and is responsible for the team’s operational performance and service delivery. He also sits on the Senior Claims Directors’ team, a team of senior claims executives who have the task of working alongside case executives on the resolution of major claims which account for 70 per cent of the Club’s claims payments.
Throughout his career at Thomas Miller, John has worked closely with Members involved in the cruise and ferry sectors and has particular expertise in handling passenger ship casualties and cruise curtailment claims.
Julia joined Thomas Miller in October 2015 after 25 years with various US litigation firms specialising in maritime matters. Julia is a member of the Bodily Injury team.
After graduating in shipping technology from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Kelvin worked for a firm of average adjusters and P&I correspondents before joining Thomas Miller in 2005. He holds a LLB and handles P&I and Defence claims. Kelvin speaks Cantonese and Mandarin.
Kwan joined the UK P&I Club in 2019 and he is the Charterers Underwriting Specialist. He is responsible for servicing and developing Charterers Liability Members together with the regional Underwriters. Prior to this role, he has worked at Dutch P&I for 10 years leading the Charterers Liability MGA facility.
Laura is a qualified solicitor and joined Thomas Miller as a Senior Claims Executive in January 2016 after 12 years in private practice. Handling both P&I and Defence cases, Laura assists all Members within EMEA 2.
Leah Wallace joined P&I Underwriting on the 14th December 2015 having previously worked in the Facilities Department at Thomas Miller for nearly 2 years.
She is an Underwriting Technician on the Europe and Americas team. Leah is studying for her CII Certificate in Insurance.
Leanne joined TMA in November 2019 as Regional Director having spent 10 years at another International Group P&I Club in London and New York. Leanne worked as a solicitor in Dublin, Ireland and is also legally qualified in England and New York. Leanne speaks French and conversational Spanish.
Ruo Lin joined the Claims Department in Thomas Miller (South East Asia) on 2nd May 2018 as Claims Executive having come from Rajah & Tann where she worked in the Shipping & International Trade for 5 years.
Initially a steamship company claims manager, Linda became a P&I Club Correspondent for various Clubs in 1981. Eventually managing the office, she handled a variety of claims on the Pacific West Coast for Members worldwide. Now she handles personal injury claims at Thomas Miller's San Francisco office.
Margaret joined Thomas Miller in 2017 from a fixed premium P&I underwriter. Previously, she worked for a leading ship management company and a chartering operator. Margaret graduated from Dalian Maritime University, and holds a Master of Common Law Degree from the University of Hong Kong. She is a qualified PRC lawyer. Margaret speaks Mandarin and Cantonese.
Masaki Oiwa joined UK Club’s Japan Branch in March 2014 as Manager for claims and marketing. He became the Representative in Japan from November 2015. Before he joined the Branch, he served as the General Manager of the Club’s correspondents, ISS P&I Japan.
Natalie joined Thomas Miller in November 2011. Following roles in the Claims department, Natalie subsequently joined the Underwriting Department as an Underwriting Technician in October 2015 and is supporting the Club's Members in the Asia Pacific region, including Japan and South Korea. Natalie is studying for her CII Certificate in Insurance.
Nick is a Senior Claims Executive in Syndicate EMEA 2, which is responsible for providing P&I and Defence claims and advisory services from London to Members based in Southern Europe, the Middle East and the UK .
Nick was called to the Bar in 1994. After a short period of practice in a Common Law set he joined Thomas Miller in Piraeus in 1999 having previously worked in a local bulk ship operating company and the Greek office of a well-known marine litigation firm. He handled P&I and Defence matters for the Greek and Cypriot membership and became the Deputy Syndicate Manager of the Piraeus office in September 2014. He transferred to London in June 2015. Nick is fluent in English and Greek and has conversational French.
Patrick joined Thomas Miller in 1984. He is the senior underwriter for North and South America, UK and Benelux. He has previously worked with Members in other European regions and the Middle East. He is also Reinsurance Director with responsibility for the Club’s reinsurances.
Paul joined Thomas Miller in 2004 and is the Club’s Head Underwriter for the Asia Pacific region. Prior to this he enjoyed an extensive career as a broker where he attained senior positions within the international broking business. Whilst mainly based in London, Paul has spent periods stationed elsewhere and is well-known in the international shipping and insurance markets.
Paul is a barrister with a master's degree in maritime law. Before joining Thomas Miller in 1996, Paul spent five years working with Greek and Norwegian shipowners. Paul is a Director of Thomas Miller Defence and is the Area Director for Japan.
Petar Modev joined Thomas Miller as Loss Prevention Executive in 2014. He currently coordinates the Condition Survey scheme for the UK P&I Club and provides technical and loss prevention advice to Members. He is an ex-mariner and had previously worked at sea, up to the rank of Chief Officer, for more than eight years. His main areas of expertise are tanker and offshore operations.
Richard joined Thomas Miller in 1997 and has a wealth of experience in handling a wide variety of P&I and FDD claims across all sectors of the shipping industry. Recently, Richard has had particular focus on ICA claims, Charterers’ cover, advising on cover for various types of contracts including COUs, and IMO 2020 in EMEA1.
Sarah is a qualified lawyer in England and worked for a major maritime law firm in London specialising in shipping and international trade. Sarah will handle P&I and Defence claims.
Sean joined Thomas Miller in 2017 from an international marine consultancy. He has worked in shipyards and marine consultancies which were based in Singapore, Malaysia and the UK. He has a background of offshore & shipyard operations, salvage & wreck removal operations and marine warranty surveys.
Sean graduated from University of Strathclyde in Naval Architecture and registered as a Chartered Engineer. He was an accredited OCIMF OVID surveyor before joining Thomas Miller.
Sean speaks Mandarin, Cantonese and some Hokkien.
Stephen joined Thomas Miller in 2009 having spent 18 years with another London based P&I Club. He handles a wide variety of people related claims with a focus on Members based in Greece, Italy and the UK. Stephen qualified as a member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers in 2003.
Stuart joined Thomas Miller in 1998 as a claims trainee for UK P&I Club’s Greek Members. In April 2005 Stuart joined PEME as the Team Administrator. Stuart is responsible for co-ordination of Member entries and administration for the clinic approval process.
Sylvia joined Thomas Miller in 2014 from another IG P&I Club. After graduating from Shanghai Maritime University, Sylvia obtained a LLM from UCL, London. She is a qualified solicitor in England and Wales. Sylvia handles P&I and Defence claims. She is fluent in Mandarin, Shanghainese and speaks some Cantonese.
Before joining Thomas Miller, Tarja worked as a claims adjuster for a liner owner/operator. As well as long experience in handling all types of non-people claims, including fires and larger cargo claims on Ro-Ro ships, Tarja has also extensive experience in reviewing customer service contracts for Members and assessing needs for extended P&I cover. Whilst currently concentrating on overseeing the EMEA1 syndicate and ensuring it provides high level of service to all its Members, she is still involved in day-to-day handling claims handling and advising Members on queries.
Tom Whadcock joined the Underwriting Department on the 12th September 2017 as a Trainee Underwriter, supporting the Club's Members in the Asia Pacific region. He joined Thomas Miller having come from a Placement Department and underwriting background. He also graduated from University College London. Tom currently holds the Diploma in Insurance and is working towards the Advanced Diploma in Insurance.
Tom joined TMA in September 2019 after 28 years with leading US law firms specializing in maritime matters. He is a graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy and holds a US Coast Guard license as a Third Engineer. Tom built, tested, and sailed aboard US Navy Submarines as a maritime and nuclear engineer. Tom handles P&I and Defence claims.
Tony joined Thomas Miller as a Ship Inspector. After passing a degree in Marine Engineering and becoming Chief Engineer, he came ashore as Superintendent and then Marine Surveyor / Consultant.
Ursula joined Thomas Miller in 1990 and has a wide experience in handling both P&I and FDD claims, for owners and charterers in the tanker, bulker and container markets. Recently Ursula has gained particular expertise in various types container claims and incidents in EMEA1.
Wai Pong Lee is a qualified Master Mariner, a retired Commanding Officer (Reservist) from the Republic of Singapore Navy, and accredited Associate Mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. Most recently, Wai Pong was the Executive Director of the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA). During his seafaring career, Mr Lee sailed on a wide range of ships. Prior to joining SCMA, he worked for a prominent international ship-owner based in Singapore and headed up the commercial management of its handy sized fleet of dry bulk carriers.
YS joined Thomas Miller from Spica Services, the Club's Singapore claims correspondents. Before joining Spica in 1990 he was a deck officer, followed by five years with the Port of Singapore Authority as a Port Safety Inspector.
