The aim of the UK Club PEME programme is to reduce the volume and value of crew illness claims, which are caused by pre-existing disease or disorders. These underlying conditions often impact on the crewmember's fitness for service and can endanger the health of other crew. Rarely do crew fail the medical for mental health issues, yet the Club continues to see an increase in mental health and suicide cases, presented by our Members.
Mental health issues affects crew of all ages, nationalities and ranks. A recent analysis of crew mental health cases revealed anxiety, social isolation, pressure of work and disturbed sleep. The rise in suicide cases, led the PEME team to speak to industry experts on what more could be done to support people at sea, and ultimately reduce the number of mental health claims.
In 2016 the UK Club will be supporting the Sailors' Society’s Wellness at Sea Programme. The programme is a unique and valuable addition to the training of crew worldwide. Wellness at Sea is a coaching programme aimed at improving seafarers’ on board well-being and seeks to combat issues by addressing ‘wellness’ as a holistic concept made up of five specific areas of well-being: Social, Emotional, Physical, Intellectual and Spiritual.Who is the Wellness at Sea programme aimed at? The course is available at two levels: an Officer Programme and a Cadet Programme. The PEME team encourage Members to consider the Wellness at Sea project for their crew.
Sandra Welch, Sailors’ Society’s director of programme, said: “We are really pleased to have UK P&I Club’s backing and recognition of the value of Sailors’ Society’s Wellness at Sea programme. Seafarers who undertake Wellness at Sea coaching will be equipped to better meet their social, emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual needs, thereby helping to prevent and minimise poor health or incidents at sea. By focusing on people rather than problems, we seek to support the centre point around which our industry revolves.”
