Video aims to mitigate the risk of collision in an overtaking situation

UK P&I Club, a leading provider of P&I insurance and other services to the international shipping community, has launched its fourth video in a series of free reflective learning training videos entitled, 'Collision When Overtaking'.

This video shows a scenario where a small tanker is being overtaken by a capsize bulk carrier when approaching a traffic separation scheme. With neither vessel taking appropriate avoiding action in accordance with the collision regulations, a situation developed whereby the bulk carrier eventually collided with the tanker's port side, resulting in serious structural damage and flooding. The video goes on to analyse why the collision occurred and what could have been done to prevent it happening.

The series of videos, which are being released by UK P&I Club on a regular basis and have been viewed over 15,000 times, provide an interactive training experience with a focus on educating seafarers on common marine accidents and how to prevent them using real-life examples sourced from the Club's claims database. Each video invites the seafarer to reflect upon the lessons learnt arising from the incident and how they could apply to their own shipboard practices and systems. The videos are available to view for training purposes by both marine employers and their employees. In response to viewer demand, subtitles in Mandarin will be added to every video in the series.

Stuart Edmonston, Loss Prevention Director at UK P&I Club, said: "The scenario depicted clearly demonstrates the consequences of vessels failing to keep a proper lookout and complying with their other obligations under the COLREGS to keep out of the way of each other.

"Many preventable accidents unfortunately still occur every year in the marine industry. Making the shipping industry safer is our key focus and the Club is gratified to have received excellent feedback on the videos released to date, highlighting their value as an interactive, reflective-learning training aid in the promotion of greater safety at sea."
