24 - 11/97 - Crew Travel Documentation Problems - Sao Paulo/Santos (Brazil)

Trulli

We have been advised by one of our members that the Brazilian authorities in Sao Paulo and Santos have started enforcing laws requiring seafarers to have proper travel documentation.

They are apparently refusing to accept temporary papers issued by some countries and require documents such as an ILO approved seaman's book or national passport appropriately marked to show what ship they are serving on and where and when they joined her.

Any ship with crew that are not properly documented is likely to be fined. Any crew member without proper documentation will not be allowed ashore.

The regulations also affect non seafarers, such as domestic staff and entertainers employed on board passenger /cruise ships.
