The Australian Safety Authority and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority have recently announced plans to crack down on the illegal disposal of dry bulk cargo residues in the Great Barrier Reef and neighbouring ports.

The authorities have stated that the loading of cargoes such as coal and iron ore frequently result in dust and residues collecting on the ship's deck and superstructure. Consequently, many ships wash their decks soon after leaving port even though the regulations prohibit this being done within three miles of the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef.

AMSA and GBRMPA will be conducting increased aerial surveillance and shipboard inspections to enforce these regulations and we presume that strict penalties will be imposed on those found in breach.
