964 - 04/14 - Iron Ore Exports - India

The Indian Supreme Court has lifted a ban on the mining and export of Indian Iron Ore from Goa.

On Monday 21st April, the Supreme Court lifted the ban on Goa mining and allowed an annual cap of 20 million tonnes of iron ore excavation.

The ban had been in place since September 2012. Before the ban, the total production of iron ore from Goa mining stood around 40 million tonnes with a Supreme Court committee suggesting that the production be capped to 20 million tonnes.

Prior to the ban, the Club saw numerous cases of the liquefaction of Indian iron ore and Members are advised to take the proper precautions on board vessels that are likely to be involved with the transport of Indian iron ore.
