Happy Thanksgiving 2011

Happy Thanksgiving 2011

We would like to wish a happy thanksgiving to all our American Members, colleagues, correspondents and friends.  The Thomas Miller Americas offices are closed for the duration of the public holiday.  However, a duty executive system continues to be maintained and contact details can be found on the Emergency Contacts page of this website.

There is a selection of US-related items on the website this week including the latest edition of Bodily Injury News.

Bodily Injury News latest
The Bodily Injury News produced by our colleagues in New Jersey and San Francisco is published this week and reviews a number of recent developments and issues related to claims for bodily injury, illness and death among passengers and crews.

A large part of this edition draws on topics covered at the recent Round Table event in September. in particular issues of civil and criminal liability for owners.  These events have attracted increasing numbers of attendees from non-US Members providing an even more varied and rewarding cross-section of maritime and legal expertise and discussion.

The newsletter is published in our Publications section, both as a conventional pdf and also in a page turning viewer within the Reading Room on this website.

We welcome your comments and suggestions on the newsletter and the articles within it.  If you have any queries regarding specific items please don’t hesitate to call the relevant author, or the editor Louise Livingston  (louise.livingston@thomasmiller.com).

Sanctions against Iran
Also this week we have updates on sanctions against Iran by the UK, EU and USA.  The extension by the United States of its sanctions against Iran is particularly noteworthy as it follows the CISADA provisions which can impact non-US companies involved in Iran’s petroleum trade.

Loss prevention: an American focus
Loss prevention bulletin 795 summarises some recent events of interest to shipowners in the United States.  These include changes to the arrangements imposed by the Customs and Border Protection agency for importation of foreign cargoes, the conclusions of the Long Beach/Los Angeles Port Access Study, implementation of regulations for the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and the deletion of Congo from the list of countries subject to additional conditions of entry.
