An Overview

The International Group of P&I Clubs (IG) has a highly active role in protecting ship operators interests. Providing liability cover for approximately 90% of the world's ocean-going tonnage, the IG has a unique Group structure. The thirteen Member Clubs, whilst individually competitive, share between them their large loss exposures, respective knowledge and expertise on matters relating to Shipowners liabilities, and the insurance and reinsurance of such liabilities.

How mutual P&I works

Each of the thirteen Clubs that operate as a Member of the International Group do so as an independent, not-for-profit, mutual insurance association. The IG Clubs, one of which being the UK P&I Club, provide third party liability cover for their Shipowner and Charterer Members. It is these Members who own the Club itself and elect a board of representatives to look after its best interests; this includes its operations and other activities.

The day-to-day operations of the Clubs are handled by professional managers, either "in-house" or external, who are appointed by and report to their Club board. For the UK P&I Club, the management is entrusted to Thomas Miller.
