The UK Club seminar-Turkey
The UK Club seminar and cocktail party was held on Tuesday the 16th June 2015 at Adile Sultan's Palace and was well attended with over 100 people from all areas of the Turkish shipping market including members, ship-owners and brokers.The event kicked off with a lively dispute between Charterers and Owners displaying the various issues in fixing a vessel. Mark Mathews (Senior Underwriting Director) played the role of a ship-owner with his legal advisor played by Ioanna Vitta from Thomas Cooper and Sue Jamieson playing the role of a UK Club claims handler. Sumit Madhu (Deputy Syndicate Manager) played the role of the Charterer with his legal advisor Jamila Khan of Ince and Co. The role of the narrator was played by Simon Main (C.O.O.) In attendance from the Club was Hugo Wynn-Williams, (Chairman of Thomas Miller Holdings), Stuart Edmonston (Loss Prevention Director), Neil Beckwith (People Claims Syndicate) and Lisa Clarke.
The seminar touched on various topical issues such as the perils of voyages for non ice class vessels trading in notorious icy territories, the current political situation in the Yemen and constant danger of infraction of sanctions. The seminar highlighted the importance of the club's function and role, concluding with a live mediation from real life mediator Steve Mills. This was well received by the audience and noted as "something different and entertaining" from what had been done previously. The seminar was followed with a drinks and canapés reception overlooking the Bosphorus.
