157 - 09/00 - Sugar Problems - Kenya

Trulli

We have been advised by the Club's correspondent in Mombasa that there is presently a severe shortage of sugar in the area. Prices have tripled and traders are taking advantage and are importing large amounts. Problems have arisen as some importers are reportedly trying to avoid duty by declaring the sugar as "raw" this is causing delay as the authorities are sampling each consignment to verify

type and quality. Some vessels have also been delayed by up to two weeks due to disputes with the authorities over this.

This situation is

expected to continue for the next 6 months and concern is raised that spillages, shortages, quality problems as well as delay may also be faced by owners trading there.
