159 - 10/00 - Increased Ship Inspections - Italy

As a result of a recent casualty off  Porto Vesme we are advised by the Club's correspondent in Genoa  that the Italian Ministry of Environment  has on the 3rd October 2000 issued a decree whereby :ALL foreign ships will be inspected at the time of entering Italian waters to ascertain compliance with safety/environment regulations (presumably SOLAS/MARPOL)Tankers not having double hulls will be authorised to enter Italian waters ONLY on a case by case basis taking into account their seaworthiness, their route and the weather conditionsThe above provisions 

will apply also to Italian ships within Italian waters

Members trading in Italian waters should be aware that it is anticipated there will be a significant increase in enforcement activity as a result of this although it is unclear at this stage where the resources to carry out the decree will come from.Source of information:
