244 - 05/02 - Fines Due to Lack of Pilot - Inland Waters - Chile

Following a recent incident, we would remind owners that ships using the Magellan Straits are required under Chilean Law to have on board a qualified pilot. In the case in question the master of the ship advised that for safety reasons it was necessary for him to use the Nassau Channel rather than proceeding round Cape Horn, the weather at the time being reportedly very bad.The ship was observed transiting the channel without a pilot and now faces two fines.1)  A fine for not using a pilot to transit Chilean interior waters

(c. US$ 7,800)

2)

A fine equal to double the pilot's fee (c. US$ 24,610)
