674 - 01/10 - Ice Build-up - Northern China

Trulli

The Association would like to inform Members of the recent build-up of ice around Bohai and Northern Chinese ports such as Bayuquan and Dalian. The ice has been reported as being the worst in the yellow sea and Bohai area for thirty years with reports saying ice is about 500-600mm thick near Bayuquan.

Local authorities in affected ports have advised that only vessels over 2,000mt DWT should attempt to enter the ports. Three icebreakers are engaged in clearing channels constantly around Bayuquan to keep the flow of vessels and cargo moving. Many small fishing vessels have been frozen to their anchors by the ice.

It has been reported that some other northern ports such as Jingtang, Caofeidian and Xingang have not been seriously affected by the ice and continue to operate as normal. The official website offering updated information on the ice conditions can be accessed here, National Marine Environmental Forecasting Centre.

Vessels scheduled to call at northern Chinese ports are advised to be prepared for freezing temperatures and to contact their local agents to ascertain updated and detailed information prior to arrival.
