Video aims to mitigate the risk of falling from heights while onboard

UK P&I Club, a leading provider of P&I insurance and other services to the international shipping community, has launched its third video in a series of reflective learning training videos entitled, 'Fall from a Generator Platform'. '

Fall from a Generator Platform' shows how an engineer, who was replacing a damaged diesel generator exhaust gas thermometer, falls from the generator platform, breaking his collar bone. The engineer was using a compressed air hose to blow away particles of dust and dirt from the exhaust pipe. Despite holding a pre-work safety meeting, the engineer loses his balance when leaning backwards to avoid dust blowing into his face and falls more than two metres from the platform onto the deck below, resulting in injury.

The series of videos, which are being released on a regular basis, provides an interactive training experience with a focus on educating crew members on common marine accidents and how to prevent them in future using real-life examples. Hosted across Thomas Miller websites, including UK P&I Club, as well as its YouTube and Vimeo platforms, the videos are available to view for training purposes by both marine employers and their employees.

Stuart Edmonston, Loss Prevention Director at UK P&I Club, said: "Conducting an on-site risk assessment to identify potential hazards and required safety precautions could have avoided the scenario depicted in the video. This case reiterates the need to implement logical safety measures such as the installation of effective guard rails and avoiding working at height when the ship is pitching and rolling.

"Unfortunately, many preventable accidents still occur every year in the marine industry. Making the shipping industry safer is our key focus and the Club hopes these interactive and reflective-learning, training videos are a useful training aid in the promotion of greater safety at sea."
