Cargo matters - LP News Supplement
The safe carriage of refrigerated cargoes invariably depends on maintaining suitable storage conditions, not just temperature, throughout their transportation. This complex and various field of cargo transport is the subject of the latest in the Club's series of Cargo Matters publications.‘Reefer matters’
focuses on the many issues surrounding the carriage of refrigerated cargoes, in both containerised and breakbulk modes.
This latest 32-page publication covers key risk areas to be addressed for refrigerated cargoes including accurate shipping preparation & instructions, pre-shipment inspection, ventilation, documentation and temperature monitoring.
Fishery products and fruit and vegetables are given particular focus as they are delicate and prone to damage, as well as often being of relatively high value.
Other titles in the 'Cargo Matters' series include: 'Bulk Matters', 'Tanker Matters' and 'Container Matters'. Each of these publications provide significant and detailed insights into loss prevention and risk management in respect of these different groups of cargo. Although recently overtaken by personal injury, cargo claims remain a significant proportion of shipowners' and charterers' liability claims. The Club established itsCarefully to Carry (C2C)
committee on cargo matters in 1961 and regularly publishes articles on cargoes that may cause claims or other cargo related issues such as hold washing, stowage and ventilation. All C2C articles published by the committee are available to Members for download from the Loss Prevention section of our website
Whilst some of the commodities reviewed are well known to be complex and demanding e.g. refrigerated or radioactive cargoes some apparently simple, even benign cargoes can present considerable hazards to our Members ships and crew.
The quality of advice given has established C2C as a key source of guidance for shipowners and ships' officers. In addition, the articles have frequently been the source of expertise in negotiations over the settlement of claims and have also been relied on in court hearings.

The purpose of the ICA is to avoid lengthy and costly litigation on matters of liability and apportionment, and instead seeks to provide a ‘rough and ready’ split of liability between the parties. The Clubs recommend to their Members that they adopt the Agreement for the purpose of apportioning liability for claims in respect of cargo which arise under, out of or in connection with all charterparties on the NYPE Form 1946 or Asbatime Form 1981, whether or not this Agreement has been incorporated into such charterparties. However, unless the ICA is specifically incorporated into the charterparty, it may not be enforceable.
Mumbai Seminar- Shell
P&I Executive and Loss Prevention Advisor Captain Anuj Velankar recently represented the UK P&I Club at a seminar organised by Shell. The seminar which was held at Mumbai, involved junior officers working on the Oil and gas vessels of Shell as well as shore staff from the London and Mumbai offices.
