Update for 31st March remains unchanged for 1st April. Whilst most Japanese ports are open, a number of the terminals within their area of operations are not. An extensive list of those ports and terminals and their respective status is contained here together with a map of Japanese ports and corresponding contact numbers.
Although it is two weeks since the tragic earthquake and tsunami took place in Japan the repercussions for shipping and international trade continue. A number of ports in the north east of Japan have been severely damaged and some individual terminals are inoperable.. . . . A more specific update is now available on the status of dry bulk ports in the range of Japan's eastern Honshu coast including those that bore the brunt of the tsunami on the 11th March. This report gives, where possible, specific advice passed to us in respect of the individual wharves & terminals in these locations.

Although there are over 200 commercial ports in Japan, our reports concern only those ports and oil terminals that have been disrupted by the earthquake and tsunami. Rescue operations are still being undertaken and no indication yet of repair/recovery works, not only to the ports but to the many roads, bridges etc. destroyed by the quake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued a circular letter advising shipmasters to comply with the latest navigational warnings issued by the NAVAREA XI Coordinator (Japan), in the wake of damage to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan.

A press release advising the arrangements for radiation monitoring of incoming cargo and passengers has been published on the US Customs and Border Protection website.

The Shanghai MSA published on 20th September, 2010 interim measures on prevention and control of marine environment pollution caused by collection of ships pollutants operations (hereafter "the Rules). The Rules came into force on 1st January, 2011.
