Due to a number of reasons, the trade of iron ore from the west coast of India has steadily increased over the last couple of months despite the presence of the monsoon. The ports where these problems have been reported are New Mangalore and Goa which have both been subjected to heavy rains over the past month. When iron ore fines are loaded in the rain or left uncovered on the quayside they absorb significant amounts of water and could liquefy which would create problems for the vessel.
The Association would like to draw the attention of its members towards the Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) which will be carried out for a three month period between the 1st of September and the 30th of November by both the Paris and Tokyo Memorandums of Understanding.

The Association has been advised by Members of difficulties in obtaining navigational information for a new container terminal just opened in Taipei.
Heavy rain and flood water in South China have affected water transport on the Pearl River. Members are advised to check with their local agents if calling to ports in the upper reaches of the Pearl River, and also to pay special attention to the origin and condition of any containers or cargo loaded in the region.
With shipping lines becoming anxious over ambiguous special requirements during the Beijing 2008 Olympics, the Club's local correspondent has collated the following information:
Correspondents advise that since 11 January 2007, substantial improvements have been seen in the management of Chittagong Port. Turnaround times have improved, berthing delays have disappeared, and theft and pilferage considerably reduced.
