Hundreds of seafarers are known to have lost their lives due to incidents which have been attributed to bulk cargoes liquefying at sea. Our Can Test videos have been produced in partnership with global cargo experts Minton Treharne & Davis (MTD).

In the below video, we look at a can test of wet iron ore fines expected to be above flow point.

What is a can test?

The can test is a quick and simple supplementary test which is used to assess the potential risk of bulk cargo liquefaction

A Sample of the cargo is placed in an empty cylindrical metal can with a capacity of 0.5 l to 1 l. The can should be about half full

The can is then struck repeatedly (25 times) on a rigid surface from a height of 20 cm.

The sample should then be carefully inspected. Any free water on the surface, or a tendency to flow indicates a risk of liquefaction of the cargo. The sample should be tilted so that any movement can be observed

The can test is not definitive, but it can trigger further investigation if the result causes concern. Loading should be stopped if there are signs of liquefaction and advice should be requested.
