Nigeria - Abandoned Cargo Advice

After which time is a container officially abandoned in Nigeria?

In Nigeria there is a 30 day period when customs seize a container.

Does the Member need an official written letter from the customer that he abandons the cargo?

You are unlikely to get any letter of abandonment from the consignee as it is either a banned import or he cannot afford the import duty.

Is it possible for the Member to survey, sell, auction or destroy the cargo in this jurisdiction?

No, customs take charge of the container and auction it themselves and there is never any excess left after customs have taken their share and paid Port Authorities. It is usual for the container to be kept by the buyer as part of the auction.

Does the Member need to obtain a court/customs order to have authority to dispose the cargo?

Customs deal with everything and do not consult the shipping line/agent.

Will the container and cargo be blocked by customs?
