Members will be aware of the tragic sinking last week of the M/V Emerald Star in the Philippine Sea, with the loss of 10 crewmembers. The ship is believed to have been carrying a cargo of lateritic nickel ore at the time, although it is too early to say whether the cargo played any role in the ship's sinking.

Seoul Loss Prevention seminar

The Club held a Loss Prevention Seminar and Reception at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul on 21st September. In attendance were Andrew Jones Regional Director for Asia, Stuart Edmonston Loss Prevention Director, DY Kim Senior Claims Director, and Sean Song Claims & Loss Prevention Executive.
A crew member recently suffered a serious head injury after a slip and fall down some stairs onboard. This resulted in him being in Intensive Care for a month followed by surgery. After his medical repatriation back to the Philippines, he required further surgery and a rigorous plan of physiotherapy, occupational therapy and rehabilitation.

Recent amendment to South Korea's regulations concerning the imposition and collection of oil spill response costs
The Club has recently been notified by our correspondent in China, Huatai, of Typhoons "HATO" and "PAKAR", which landed in southern China on 23rd and 27th August 2017 respectively.
The Club has received information that on 29th July & 12th August 2017 a small explosive-laden remotely piloted craft (ERPC) had been utilised in and around the Port of Mocha, Yemen.

A UK P&I Club Member recently reported the death of two crew members. The crew were found unresponsive onboard, apparently suffering from heat stroke. Sadly, particularly at this time of year, this is not an isolated incident.
